Build quality approaching German premium brands, excellent safety, middle of the road design, good reliability. They've never had much of a reputation outside of being safe and quirky, aside from a brief sporty period in the 90s.
People who are stringent on money will not go for a premium suv/car, they will usually get the Toyota, Honda, Hyundai and Kia vehicles or large American suv/trucks. People who can spend money will rather go for Bmw, Mercedes and Porsche. People who have money but want to curb their car maintenance costs go for Lexus. Omit out these people you are left with very few people who go for quirky cars like Volvo, Mazda, audi and Subaru.
