Eliminate PMs. Glorified meeting facilitators
I apologize if I come off as entitled but I cannot understand how I am not even getting consideration for many Data Engineer positions I am applying to. I recently graduated with a double major in MIS and Finance. I currently work as a data analyst within healthcare consulting but also have data pipeline development responsibilities. I held an internship during college at Volvo centered around providing data visualization for IoT data. I apply to numerous data related jobs, often with referrals but seem to never get consideration to almost all of the places. For example I applied to a data engineer position at Accenture today and got an automatic rejection 10 minutes later, even though I had all required and preferred experience for the role. Looking on LinkedIn I see a variety of experience of the people in these roles. Of course I see the people from the CS or engineering masters/bachelors background but I also see people who only have a certificate in data science get these roles. I am all for DEI but shouldn’t it be more about merit. Like I wouldn’t be so frustrated if it was CS masters graduates that got all of these roles but that’s not the case. How does a cert equate to internships, projects and a degree? I worked a literal backbreaking job throwing brick to afford my education, so that’s the cherry on top of my frustration.
