New grad here. Can anyone tell me what the new grad SWE interview process is like? Passed the HR screen and have the phone interview next. Thanks. Current TC: 0 (student)
I am a May 2021 grad but was hired as computer vision engineer so take my experience for what you will. I was recruited for an AI company for some research I had published during my senior year. Passed the phone screen, and then had 2 technical interviews. The first was with a senior dev in the data systems and system engineering department. She asked me to talk about some projects I had worked on and then asked me concept questions about AI (what is over-fitting? how would I make it generalize? what is the difference between dense and convolutional neural networks? etc.) Then she asked me some system design questions, some stuff about data management, and then some Python specific stuff. After all that, she had me live code a function to reverse sort a dictionary by value in Python3. The whole interview took about 1.5-2 hours A few days later, I met with the VP who asked me more of the same questions (projects, machine learning shit, etc). Then I met with the lead computer vision engineer who intentionally was a dick to throw me off. Told me how the models works, asked me how I would improve them, and then yelled at me for answering the question. After that, met with another senior dev who gave me a more intensive Python review. The whole process took 4 hours. 4-5 days later I was offered the job and have been there ever since. Important things to remember: - Ask clarifying questions every step of the way (demonstrates critical thinking and openness, 2 very good traits) - Stay calm, they will try to throw you off, this is just to see how you react - Confidence, you gotta believe in yourself or they never will. Best of luck!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate the detailed insight.
