I have moved to Seattle about 3 years ago and not because of Amazon or any other hub, but because of area, nature and probably good mix of different sort of people from different area and not just IT. My plan was to stay year or so and make decisions. We love Seattle, but living about 12 min drive and now I have mixed feelings. Amazon is every where, Google building a campuses, FB bought REI headquarters building, Google new campus are nice, but you can cross road and see homeless camp, I saw people injecting at the bus stop just in front of Uber office at the morning time. Home Prices are crazy, I would say insane now. Yes, you can apply to Google, Amazon, FB etc, but for what ? work harder to pay a little bigger to pay more higher. And everybody mentions Amazon will come to Bellevue and all will start ever more crazy. I had rejected all SF offers just because of area and what is going on there. It is ok if you’re single, but with family it not make sense. And as single it is probably not make sense too. And now Seattle going same route. #tech #seattle
It’s not tech that’s the problem. It’s the government refusing to do anything about mental illness, and giving the bare minimum to the homeless.
This. Seattle City Council is doing nothing to prevent the decay happening in the streets while business and wealth move out to Eastside
Bullshit. Leave the homelessness issue out of this. Edit: or rather... the homeless issue is partly a result of lax policing and stupid expensive housing. The homeless didn't drive up housing 4-5X in less than 20 years in Seattle and the Eastside.
The presence of tech doesn’t get people addicted to heroin or meth on the street. The problem is law enforcement that has gotten increasingly lax in the last 10 years or so. Similar problems are seen in non-tech cities with similar ideology (like Portland).
Ok. People addicted to everywhere, not just SF or Seattle, or USA or etc. Does tech company attract liberal? Probably yes.
Just work in California. Orange County / San Diego is king
What did I just read? Do people actually think the majority of the homeless people they see are priced out of the real estate / rental market? They don’t think that many other factors including mental health, drug addiction and other cities shipping randoms here could be some major reasons why there’s a huge homeless population? What about Portland which isn’t exactly a tech city? Are the large number of people in tents and doing drugs in the open a direct cause of their non-existent tech hub? Fuck that. I think Seattle has greatly benefited from the tech boom here. Educated families, money spent on businesses, corporate and property taxes contributing to infrastructure. What about giving people mental health and addiction support? Or slowing down the prevalence of cheap drugs? How about giving people real consequences for illegal activities? Lol at Amazon being clickbait. Boeing, Microsoft all had a presence here. What is Amazon doing that’s fucking shit up?
Amazon is buying all the land so they can't build housing! (conveniently ignoring the fact that the land is zones for business use not living use)
Can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic
The tech industry isn’t exactly a newcomer to the Seattle area. Microsoft has been here for what, 40+ years? At this point it’s part of the fabric of Seattle’s culture as much as Boeing, Starbucks, etc. I think tech has been great for the Puget Sound region. Sure, not everyone has benefitted equally, but there’s a lot of money to be made in this city if you work hard. Seattle’s not perfect but it’s still one of the best large cities in the country to live in.
Ok. You work hard and made a lot of money and now you pay all for mortgage, rent, daycare, parking, lift ticket raised to crazy and you need to reserve to go ski for weekend. Kid playground are full. Parks are full. Trails are full. Bears are dead :)) Dinner takes 2x, 3x and etc and food are garbage. What it the sense ? Life are not just money.
Then move somewhere else. Obviously places with natural benefits (weather, mountains, etc) are going to attract more people to live there and drive up prices. If it wasn't tech it'd be something else.
You rejected Bay Area offers to go to Nordstrom 🤔 ?
I’m not in Nordstrom anymore:))
I have moved to Seattle due to nature and ability to snowboarding in 45min - 1.5h drive, community and probably not so high taxes and not so crazy home prices. And during this 2 years two of families I know moved to Texas, manager moved to New Orleans and some people moved to Colorado and Texas as well. I don’t like Seattle area converting to second Silicone valley with all of it pros-and-cons.
Where is google building new campus ?

TLDR: I regret moving to Seattle.
From what area?
Who knows? You’re the one who moved here. I’m just summarizing your screed!
