TikTok: Why can’t you just stop working after 40hrs?
So… I am the “naive” lad who accepted a TikTok offer for nearly same TC because I don’t really like where Twitter is headed , our CEO is just… 🤷♂️ and we have some internal culture issues of our own. Tiktok appears to be the next social media and 1bln users is a great motivation to join. However, I read all the posts about the HORRIBLE culture of TIKTOK. It all starts with the 996 and is compounded with HQ in China, having late meetings, non-Chinese speakers having trouble on career growth and Leadership not caring much about these things because they think working for TikTok itself is a privilege so people shouldn’t complain about bad WLB. Now… I can’t stop asking myself… Why can’t people at TikTok just stop working after they put in 40 hours roughly? Sure, when we are on yearly compensation we are obligated to fulfill our job duties even if it means working extra hours. But what happens if you tell your manager/director that you have worked 40-50 hours a week already OR what if you just close your laptop for the weekend and ignore work emails/chat messages??? Will you ger fired/PIP’d if you say you worked 40-50 hours in a week? Will you get fired/PIP’d if you don’t logon on weekends? I mean come on… I close my laptop on Friday evening, login on Monday and will I be in trouble for not being online on weekends working? 🧐🧐🧐 YOe 13, TC 450

It’s not about hours worked. It’s about deliverables. And if you haven’t worked in a company with bad wlb, the reality is often the expectations to deliver don’t match up with what you can accomplish within 40hrs. So you can say you worked 40hrs. And your manager can say you didn’t deliver X, Y or Z. Your peers that are working longer hours and are blocked on things that you need to deliver will also have low opinions of you and give poor feedback. And then you will get the PIP. Saying “I put in my 40hrs” is fine at a company with good wlb, but less fine at a results-oriented company
This, but just to add (based on my experience with Amazon), this is usually only at the beginning while you are ramping up, every year you will do more in less time, at Amazon I’m barely working 25 hours per week and still getting good reviews, but I decided to move to ByteDance knowing the first year will be crazy but rewarded later. As long as my career grows faster I’m ok working overtime, other people take degrees or courses in their free time, you are free to choose how to make yourself more valuable.

Man you are gonna get judged SOOOO hard by tiktokers if you say “i already worked 40 hours so im not gonna do what you just pinged me to do”. Keep this thought to yourself and never speak out of it

That Twitter TC or TikTok TC?
For most people, they are trying not to get the m- rating (0 bonus). Working hrs depend on the team. My team avg around 35-45 hrs a week.
Toxicity comes from upper management. They do nothing about the teams with horrible wlb, and tell them its an honor to work at TikTok 🤪
Is it really an honor to work at tiktok? Doesnt feel as prestigious as fang. Maybe it is like how samsung is to koreans?
You must be really naive to join a pre IPO Chinese company and assume having Google like WLB.
