Since we have a mix of tech people and MBA people, would be great to see the feedback on what you guys think of MBB data scientist consultants and whether exit opportunities are good. I'm referring to the DS positions I see from BCG Gamma, QuantumBlack (acquired by McK), etc. Of course I don't expect their exit options to be as good as strategy/general consultants, but where do ex-MBB DS go? Do they go on to be technical managers at FANG?
It is actually pretty good, some exited to director levels at non FANG. Depends on how you sell yourself
FANG might be more difficult but it is possible if you have a relevant PhD and research experience
If someone is already a data scientist at FAANG/Microsoft with relevant PhD experience in ML and wants to eventually switch from IC to tech management and executive roles, do you think Joining MBB helps to accelerate that? Switching to management from IC and climbing coorporate ladder is a veryyy lengthy process.
Yes it will if you join MBB at a senior level then go back to FANG as a manager
Thanks BCG, what type of senior level position? joining as a general consultant or expert consultant or senior level data scientist?
Looks like MBB goes to PM at FAANG. Is PM a technical manager?
Nah but it’s probably the best non-technical job other than products marketing manager or strategy manager. But typically these MBB guys had an engineering undergrad.
JUST SEARCH LINKEDIN WITH TITLE DATA SCIENTIST AND PAST COMPANIES MBB. LOTS OF GREAT EXITS
My personal bias is that if they were good, they’d already be at FANG as data scientists. But let’s hear from the audience.
Last I looked, FAANG specifically lists preference for MBB or Big 4 experience for roles like that. There’s a higher barrier of entry for MBB/Big 4 for roles like that. Whereas data scientists at FAANG need to be upper echelon, they support a product offering. MBB/Big 4 are different in that they ARE the product. It requires a whole additional skill set on top of their technical abilities.
Interesting. Do you know what the entry level TC these consulting roles entail? It sounds like they’re more like our equivalents to data consultants. Are the data scientists building machine learning systems for these other companies or advanced analytics?
