How mainstream is this book, or is there a chance we know each other? I thought that book was insane :)
I'm not sure how well-known it is, but I took it for a pattern recognition course and it turned out to be one of the most influential books I've read in my career. It's an incredible book, and I'm excited to read it again and work through some of the exercises, this time at a more leisurely pace! When did you study it?
It was an independent study group in grad school. I respect but do not share your enthusiasm for the book :) I recall the looseness of the bounds on some proofs, and a lot of assumptions about various quantities going to infinity, and thinking sarcastically “well, that seems useful”. I do still own my copy because it has a great presence on the bookshelf.

Is this the study material they give people for iq tests?

Thank you for your interest in my background. I have over a decade of experience with stochastic processes, including a PhD in the field, and 7 years of enterprise experience working on some high-profile AI projects. However, I am now consulting on AI projects for Fortune 100 and 500 companies, and so I am taking the opportunity to refresh my fundamentals. It's also a phenomenal book. When I took the course, I didn't have time to read it for pleasure, given the demands of the graduate program.
