Remember the good old rest and vest days where you used to coast and M$ spent big money on lavish conferences, lunches/dinners, entertainment, performances, swag etc? Well, I got news for you, it's never coming back! A #ChatGPT search requires 10x as much power as a traditional #Google search making it "very inefficient" combined with the fact #Microsoft has 49% stake in #OpenAI and has been investing $10+ Billion every quarter ($10.5B the quarter before, $14B previous quarter) and that spend is accelerating, which means MSFT will not have much in leftover $$ for R&R or anything for that matter. Sales and Product teams will constantly be under pressure to deliver better and better results and faster product iterations for the foreseeable future and #layoffs will be synonymous with MSFT culture or what's left of it. All this while the markets are at an all time high - when they dive, rest assured they always have and always will, MSFT will be in a world of pain. OpenAI has the capacity to sink MSFT if GenAI turns out to be a passing fad and doesn't generate $$$$$ like MS hopes it would. So far, with a few exceptions, GenAI sales have been at 'hobbyist project' scale and not anywhere near expectations. Buckle up or better yet, YWYF.
A single order of magnitude difference for a technology this new is nothing. I thought it was much larger. This will get figured out, easily. That’s the way of all technology.
Turns out generating a new response every search instead of querying an existing database isn't efficient
But powering better searches with generated content saves annotation work and scales far better to store and retrieve better quality data fast. Not everything is generated, but we are solving the harder stuff with less compute power from the get go when you look at training custom neural models for everything.
Plus all of this computer on edge devices will become user spend on hardware and software, leaving bigger hairier jobs to the data center. This is the cycle of AI as it’s been since computer vision was pushed to edge devices.
Remember how expensive computers were back in the day? Or how heavy and inconvenient were mobile phones? How about price of 1 GB internet in 2000?
You're right, I should have said good old days are lost "for this generation". My bad.
Good old days gone means jobs are decreasing?
Microsoft folks never made big money 😂. Don’t pick Bill Gates and a few big executives. Resting is real only in some org, in most other orgs, it’s a scam. Msft always paid very low, so their HR Propaganda has been to create a WLB myth. I had 5 years in AWS and then 2 years in Msft. Msft WLB is a scam.
Microsoft become absolute shit company to work at, leaving asAp
Wait till plugins and advertising companies onboard to ChatGPT / Copilots opening a new revenue stream. Remember google and meta are run on ad revenue
