TLDR; Can you fail one section of a technical assessment and still move onto the next round? I just had my first panel style technical assessment for a Business Analyst position with 2 interviewers - one being a BI Developer and the other a Lead Data Scientist. I answered most questions well, even got a few āwow yeah thatās a good responseā when asked about specifics of statistics, different chart types, pros and cons of each etc. But the BI Developer asked some SQL specifics that I bombed. One was a hypothetical scenario between 2 tables, you want to match values from the first table with those from the other table. I stated a left join to retrieve all the values from the 2nd table onto the first, but it was an inner join since itās just matching and not wanting null values (I realized this as he started explaining). Felt super dumb after missing a basic join question and not factoring in the null values. Another question was trying to get values from 3 columns (addresses) of a table without a PK. I stated that I would create a PK in addition to the the table to ensure thereās a value being populated across at least 1 of the 3 columns. But a PK actually wasnāt important for the output, and it would be a Case statement or better yet Coalesce. I immediately had a shaking my head type of moment as Iāve used countless case statements and was focused on the wrong thing with that question. He asked familiarity with Coalesce function, I said Iām familiar but use a lose of Case statement logic instead. The rest of the interview seemed to go really well. Answered some unexpected questions, got great responses from both on different behavioral questions, data scenarios, and answered questions on my Tableau portfolio. Guess Iām really just curious how screwed I am for straight bombing 2-3 SQL questions within the assessment. The job description includes proficiency in SQL, I was explaining my thought process and clarifying questions but still didnāt get the correct answer.
