I am browsing SWE job posts and notice the different departments.(FinTech, Flights, Platform, Accommodation, etc.). I want to check with insiders if I am signing up for hell or not. I am interested in: 1. Interesting engineering problem to solve 2. Management competencies (prefer to avoid micromanaging, unrealistic deadline) 3. Work-life balance 4. Operation (is there on call? How often is firefighting? Good plan on observability?) 5. Tech stack (Still using Perl?) YoE:12 TC: 130k #jobopening #culture #officelife #workplace
The company has gradually transitioned from the perl monolith to microservices for the past 3-4 years. In additio relative to FAANG you can still own quite a big area rather than a small cog in a big machine
Flights department is your best bet. There is no Perl. The area is relatively new, a lot of stuff to build. I don’t know the management. There is on call everywhere. Only critical services have 24/7 on call.
But the product leaders are awful
I’d avoid Booking.com in general if you’re after interesting engineering problems to solve and high quality management. Great for EU visa and WLB tho
That’s what I heard too.
