I want to preface this by saying I’m not Asian, I’m Caucasian but not American, so my insights into this topic are limited to an external to that community view. Recently, the level of racially motivated violence against Asians seems to have skyrocketed. It’s everywhere and not just in California where we have a large Asian diaspora but everywhere in the US. Just read this article about what seems to be racially profiled victims in multiple spa shootings in Atlanta. https://amp-cnn-com.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2021/03/16/us/metro-atlanta-shootings/index.html Why do you think this is happening? My running hypothesis is that all dormant (and no so dormant) racists in this country, where there seem to be so many of, have been stripped away from being able to show as much hostility towards black people because of how much that community awakened during the past year, so now for fear of retaliation, they’ve switched to a more docile race (at least that’s how Asians are perceived. Whether true or not that’s a different story). Also, the prolonged Covid19 situation has not helped because of the origin of the virus and how cooped up people have been during the last year. Am I missing anything here? Do you think this situation will be alleviated soon somehow and if it is will they just move onto the next weaker group (maybe all women regardless of race or Latinos?) This country has really taken a turn for the worse in my decade of living here.
These fucking losers are committing these cowardly heinous crimes because they have nothing going on in their lives and they see Asians as easy targets. Let’s be honest here, people in the US and Europe are dismissive and condescending towards Asians based on whatever outdated stereotypes they might believe. I encourage everyone in the Asian community to stop suffering in silence and to fight back. Yes, even with retaliatory violence.
Calm down, Scuba Steve. Take a breath. Let’s not go down eye for an eye route.
Don’t overgeneralize, please. I’m European and I never saw anyone around me being or thinking in a condescending fashion against Asians in my 20+ years of living in Europe.
The word ‘China virus’ is racism
They maybe related. But some people who were attacked weren’t even Chinese, they were Korean. It’s more like a racial hate crime.
Found this on reddit https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EwqE8JLWUAIJ7xk?format=png&name=small Actually so fucked up
UPDATE. Sorry if i mislead you https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/03/17/atlanta-spa-shootings-live-updates/ According to this, the attacks might not be racially motivated though. Regardless, video was hard to watch, feels like they're humanizing the murderer 😔
NYT and a FB rep have confirmed this post is fabricated. https://twitter.com/daveyalba/status/1372202957090000897?s=21
SMH this was the reason that authorities didn't wanna label it as "China virus". Because ill-informed scum resort to stuff like this. So many people were crying that we're too PC, etc. Actions have consequences
Congress should denounce racism and defund the police!
OP - can you cite any statistics on attacks on Asians by race per capita? Seems like a massive leap in logic to pin the blame while excluding the very same group that seems to have perpetrated a significant portion of these crimes.
There were 122 incidents of anti-Asian American hate crimes in 16 of the country’s most populous cities in 2020, an increase of almost 150% over the previous year, according to data compiled by California State University’s Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism. That’s despite of general racially motivated crime rates declining. And these are numbers for crime that’s officially been labeled as racially motivated. Who knows how many more instances actually were but were not categorized as such or were never even reported.
Neither one of the pictures you posted break attackers down by race. I don't disagree there has been an increase in hate crimes but your post seems to say that the people perpetrating racism against black Americans are the ones doing the same to Asiams today. The implication is that an overwhelming majority is non black Americans. A cursory look at the articles from NextShark indicates that on a per capita basis, black Americans seem to be committing more crime and this is concentrated in the cities. Can you refute this argument and show data that this is not the case? You made the claim. You need to back it up with data.
No, I have a hypothesis but I don’t consider my hypothesis facts. This post is meant to incite conversation about this, not to judge the validity of my hypothesis.
In that case, I don't agree with the statement about dormant racism. I believe this has been happening for a while but is only now gaining attention. Asians are considered docile and easy targets and to a certain extent it is true. Most of these attacks took the victim completely by surprise. I don't want to jump to any conclusion without data - it's just meaningless opinions. A cursory look over of articles suggests this is an inner city problem with the perpetrators being black more often than not on a per capita basis. But you also have to adjust for the fact that poorer inner cities have a higher portion of black people. So this is a moot observation if you wanted to consider the bigger picture. Draw what conclusions you will from it. I wouldn't say this is a problem attributed to any one race - it seems to be more prevalent in poorer neighborhoods and pretty non existent in the suburbs and wealthy neighborhoods. So IMO, it seems like people in poorer neighborhoods seem to have some hatred against Asians. Probably because of the model minority stereotype.
Fake news
Let's wait for the investigation report. It may not be a hate crime. Another emerging theory is that he was a sex addict frequenting these rub and tugs (which in america generally are always ran by asian women) and either was upset that they wouldn't service or wanted to remove temptation.
STFU.
I mean...sure, that may be true but it doesn’t take away from the general message above. That was just one example. There has certainly been a spike in violence against Asians.
