Current TC: 110/y, mgr working to ensure permanent remote work so I can be near family. Main work is penetration testing which I love. BS&MS + ~3 YoE. WLB is incredible, with understanding mgr and skip level, plus team. AWS security engineer offer; TC: ~210/y. Not negotiated yet. Typical 5/15/40/40 RSU vesting schedule with 1&2 year sign ons to get TC to 210 for those years. Security team for code reviews and threat modeling, WLB described as "45-50 hours per week but staffing to make this better." Relo being mandatory to one of the offices of Seattle, DC, or NYC, with DC being first choice. 1) How does this offer stack up comparatively in your experience? 2) How true is the WLB at AWS? Heard Amazon is bad, wasn't sure if AWS was as bad. Should I believe the mgr is trying to make it better as they said? 3) How true is the forced PIPout/turnover in AWS in recent years? 4) Any recent luck pushing remote for L4? Thinking about shopping for more remote-friendly and more pentest-focused/exploit dev/security research work as it's what I heavily prefer. Feel like I would be bored doing code reviews/threat modeling as it's not my strong suit or main interest, but the TC is the carrot in front of this mule. Godspeed on your TC hunt, friends, and remember to treat yourself to sanity breaks from time to time. #aws #amazon #seceng #security
What’s your current location, Is it LCOL? Also, a lot of companies are doing remote these days, if that’s important to you you could probably find something if you keep looking. Also from what I hear L4 at AWS is as bad as it gets WLB-wise
Currently in LCOL. They said I'd be coming in as strong L4 so L5 potentially within a year, but obviously if it ain't in writing it doesn't matter.
210 seems outside of L4 band unless it’s Bay Area/NY (for SOftware Dev, not sure if security band is just higher). To me it Sounds like a L5 offer in which case its a bit on the low side 190k-300(upper bound might be lower).
Don't buy into that💩. The promotion p 99.9 is 1.5 to 2 years. So set expectations according to that
Great TC for L4 Sec Engg. Remote work approval is almost impossible these days.
Aws seceng here. Any company will take all of the hours you'll give them. Set boundaries, ensure you're not a slave. Aws security doesn't do well with PIPs. I've only seen 2 in my 2.5 years at aws security. Remote as L4 will be darn near impossible. Great TC for an L4 by the way! I would go to DC/Herndon personally rather than Seattle. I believe it's a little lower cost of living, and much seems much nicer to me!
Can I DM you?
I doubt there are many sec engs from Amazon/AWS on Blind. Most of the whining here is from low level SDEs.
