Hi, Living in EU, Early 30s, PhD in semiconductor HW/Design (5+ yoe including PhD) and earning hardly 90k TC (though my job is super relaxing and remote). So far I don't see any hopes of savings while living in EU (Nordic side). I really want to earn well where I can also do savings. Thinking to relocating US with my EU passport, as I have seen there possibilities to get really good TCs and do some savings. What do you think it's worth it to try US since the opportunities are literally huge there? #semiconductor #apple #nxp #nvidia #amd #samsung
2023 may not be a good year to move. Layoffs or hiring freeze in majority of companies.
Itās a good idea to consider moving to the US for a decade while you maximize your earning potential. The pay bump is significant. Later you can always come back to EU that offers better retirement options.
Well you got the point
Early 30 with phd, donāt waste your time in the EU. Get a O visa, move to US, make money and move back whenever you want. Saving rate can still be significant in the longer term with a family if thatās your case.
Iāve not worked in EU but from what I hear the work culture in EU is more laid back than US. If you have an established base in EU Iād definitely consider the mental health cost of uprooting yourself and potentially working longer hours. If youāre inclined best would be to find a job that is ready to pay to relocate you to US. Be wary though some relocations need to be paid back if you leave/ are fired for under performance.
Yes, I feel laid back been in EU with plenty of peace of mind, but TC, taxes, opportunities really suck with no hopes of savings. Should have moved in mid 20s but no regrets.
When market picks up, move to the US and work for 5-10 years before returning to EU for better/cheaper healthcare and education
Another smart comment šš¼
EU passport doesnāt help you much. Your PhD, however, might help you to get an O-1 visa. Thatās what I did when I came to the US from Europe. And in terms of WLB, I never worked more than 9-5 (in average).
Move to Taiwan for semiconductors
Leave EU shithole
Yes, engineers are not valued in Europe in the same way as in the US. Move to the US and boost TC! In Europe, both partners need to work to have a half decent life and hardly save anything!
So many people starving in EU, itās sad to see. I donāt get why people would stay there.
What will you do with visa
That's not an issue. I have referrals + EU passport
Eu passport is no different from any other passport thatās not American. Again, what will you do for visa?
