Coaster - does the bare minimum to get by.. takes more time to get promoted, if at all, but doesn't care as long as getting paid. Achiever - constantly tries to improve things around, aggressively targets goals. Moves up the ladder quicker than others. Tc: 220k Yoe: 4

Bad managers convert achievers -> coasters. Good ones motivate you to become an achiever
Kind of agree but a true achiever will jump ship
I was an achiever then I got lazy. The carrot dangling is like 50% extra work for 10% increase. Just half ass job, play video games, leetcode+ hop when convenient for promo. Eventually that strategy will stop working but hopefully hoarded enough cash to gtfo by then Another way to view this is, my ability to influence the amount of work I do >>>> my ability to influence promo timeline
Anyone feel that when you have good relationship with manager you can work longer?
It’s a lot easier to make money by being a smart coaster than a try hard achiever
I try to coast but my instinct is to achieve so in addition to the coasting I get to deal with incredible anxiety and ultimately still over-perform.
And humble bragger to boot
Yeah I’m a regular cornucopia of stress-induced positive outcomes.
Depends on the month, weeks or even days
It's not always that binary. Very common scenario for many people is to start as an achiever, work hard first couple of years. Then something goes wrong, you either stop learning and loose enthusiasm, your efforts are drowned in political games and corporate BS, company culture changes, stock price drops, etc. And then the achiever turns to a coaster, starts doing more LC and eventually leaves .
Exactly this. I now LC to find a place to coast.
This hit me. Not SWE but I've definitely been at the same place too long. Hoping to make the jump next year
Was an achiever. I saved my company millions in costs per annum. I didnt get promo. I stopped doing work for about 2 years, just answering emails and no actual work. I got promoted.
I was an achiever till I came on blind and realized I’m bottom of the band
Real talk. Nothing as demotivating as knowing you are getting lowballed.
Yup. Got promoted. Stopped caring.
