Is it foolish to pick Netflix? Not staying at LinkedIn because the culture sucks and TC will cliff next year. My instinct is to join Netflix but higher level and TC at Pinterest is making me second guess. Both are remote positions doing data infra. Similar workloads (40-50 hrs) but Netflix has a more stable charter and less employee churn due to better eng culture. Pinterest has frontloaded 3 year vesting 50-33-17. Refresher amounts are unclear. These are the “final” offers post negotiation. Netflix is very firm and won’t match. If you are l5 caliber, wouldn't it be easier for you to get promoted at Netflix and get 500k TC?
It’s not clear how difficult the L4 to L5 path is or what the bottom of the band is for L5. Is it really 500k? My guess was low to mid 400s for freshly promoted I’d imagine I can get to L5 in 1.5-2 years though without trouble at Netflix with the right opportunities.
Since being a senior engineer in this economy is king, does it ever make sense to take Pinterest purely for the level bump? Promotion to L5 in 1.5-2 years is not guaranteed, especially at Netflix where there are so many talented engineers and it sounds like they expect a lot (from the culture memo). However, at Pinterest you would be guaranteed a senior role and if you wanted to leave/or got laid off, it would be much easier finding the next role as an existing L5.
Nice work! Definitely not foolish to pick Netflix. Cash is king. Did you do anything special to make it into the L5 loop for Pinterest with 4 YOE? They usually want 5+ YOE, and I'm wondering how strict that requirement is.
The recruiter is the one who reached out and the work at LinkedIn is really similar for the team at Pinterest. So they were okay with scheduling the loop. I think I got a bit lucky here on the loop with the questions being areas I’m comfortable with. This is a case of being a one trick pony 😂

Netflix no brainer
Netflix better for career growth and comp increases. I have pretty limited info on them compared to other companies but iirc they are generous with pay increases if you perform well. On the other hand, pinterest even with refreshers will keep you around 400k until promo, but the bar is lower for promo and expectations

Phone screen is leetcode. Onsite is not leetcode. Big emphasis on low level systems, distributed systems, and concurrency. The behavioral is typical Netflix culture deck
What do you mean by low level systems? I'd be interested to know what you studied beyond the leetcode + alux xu book if you don't mind sharing - trying to get out of Amazon currently.

Depends on location. A tier 2 state is a 10% reduction from a Los Gatos salary. Tier 3 is more than that. So could be the difference of remote location.
The personal top of market calculation they use is a bit weird. They use some market data to say this is my top of personal market and have stayed pretty firm. Part of the unwillingness to match is the front loaded RSU schedule for Pinterest. The original offer was 360 and they bumped to 370.
How are you getting 400k at Pinterest? Are you only calculating the 1st year TC?
Yeah. The recruiter sort of implies that refreshers would make up for the back half. But they’re pretty vague about it. What is your experience with it?
you will get zero refreshers if the stock goes up and you are in band they did this to me at uber so i have zero incentive to get promoted until i get close to a cliff lol and even then it would only happen at like y3-4 of my vest

Most companies die at some point. Pinterest will die sooner than Netflix.
Also, why are you moving from Linkedin for such a small salary change and coz of "culture"? these companies are the same, they have the same culture, one is not better than the other in any way, they are equally boring and dead. Among all these, Pinterest is the one that matters least to this world and Netflix is still streaming movies and producing a few in 2024. They started that in 1999 and nothing has changed since then.
You don’t know how bad the culture and infra is at LinkedIn. No comments on Pinterest though, I tend to agree. And I’m going to cliff anyways, the TC change wasn’t the motivator
