I’m really struggling with ADHD, meds help once I’ve sat down and started to work, but not helping at all with procrastination or having a healthy routine. It seems there are lots of therapists that “specialize in ADHD”, but all they do is the generic CBT stuff and aren’t aware of any of the more specific & effective ADHD treatments & strategies. Does anyone know how you find actual experts? An online service/remote service would be great. I’m located in California. #adhd #adhdcoach
How and where did you get diagnosed?
I don’t even remember when I was first diagnosed, I think there were signs in more formal psychological evaluation since my early childhood, many of my family members have ADHD, so it was always assumed. I only started taking meds in my mid to late 20s. That time round I think a psychiatrist gave me some sort of verbal test, and I’ve been rediagnosed about a half dozen times since then in the same way.
It’s easy Amazon. Here’s the self evaluation that I’ve gotten from multiple psychiatrists. https://add.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/adhd-questionnaire-ASRS111.pdf Even if you answer honestly, I would guess that 50% of the population has it. If you want to cheat, the answers are highlighted. It’s a made up disease that describes normal human behavior. It’s your decision if you want to take meds to focus better. That’s how most psychiatrists look at it. But yeah, the hardest part of the whole process is finding somewhere to fill your script. The FDA limits the supply.
My wife found a local Adhd coach and has been with her for a few years now. She's somewhat helpful, but at the end of the day, it comes down to my wife needing to do the thing, and sometimes motivation waxes and wanes, and no amount of reminders would help. Ironically, taking regular piano lessons and joining a few choirs did more for my wife's routine and structure than anything else.
Have you tried getting diagnosed and taking medicine?
Yeah, I said in the post that meds help when I’m actually siting down and working, but what’s hurting me is the larger issues like maintaining a schedule and procrastination
