What does it mean?

Last year, I got promoted to senior after ~1y and yes phd, area is ML. My Last year impact was 4/5 (no one got 5/5 i believe) This year I got 3/5 (one level above expected impact). I am so disappointed with this rating and my manager and skip level said ppl gets expected after promotion and you are good. Also money was absolutely peanuts. The worst thing is everyone on the team got the same impact. Including a colleague who were out for around 4 months … , 8-4 colleagues and … It’s a little but insulting it means 12 months of my work is the same as 8 months of theirs (same promotion same level) All the team admit that I was working harder and I deserved outstanding, my delivery usually being used in our team internally, so others can do downstream deliveries for customers and externals. I think overall our team was not meeting the super high expectations that boss set… ( while it wasn’t bad at all) What is your interpretation of the situation? Are there any legal things that they want to avoid by doing this? in case of layoffs for example? Also skip level said if you want a switch (in the team) you should speak up. I don’t know what he meant? Is he implying I should jump off the train? Or what? I think there are more experienced ppl that it would be nice to work with them. Though not sure if it ends up with more work, or a micro manager boss … Tc:190K Equity peanuts @microsoft @amazon @apple

Which part exactly? Bad or good?

The consistently disappointing TC and annual refreshers part.

I think it’s common to get a lower rating right after promotion. Were you expecting to always get 4’s?

Tbh yes, I was ripping my ass off for various reasons with extended hours I was expecting better than my colleagues caring less.

It's nothing to do with your performance. You took a hit because you were recently promoted. Brush it off and move on as it's normal and nothing you can do about it.

normal. no way they are going to promote you twice in 2 years. you have to be beyond exceptional for that. like, you got underlevelled when hired. if it were me i’d tell my boss (and skip since you have his ear) that you outperformed and are so disappointed. tell them if you don’t get a promo next year you’ll be heading for the door. now that’s me. you have to deliver the message correctly and asses your relationship correctly. there’s no way i can understand how it is for you personally.
