Title says it all (also probably the company in Seattle) . New grad from UToronto here. I like the company in Toronto much more (even though it isnt FAANG) but Toronto is as expensive as Bay Area (I have interned in both Toronto and Bay) and I dont think I will save much. Should I just take the 170K for larger savings?
Seattle is depressing imo
You're at the beginning of your career. Focus less on money. Focus more on learning and to some extent on resume branding
I moved to Seattle over a year ago from Bay Area and I love it here
How was the last winter? Do you miss the sun in CA?
I enjoyed it. (This is my 2nd winter.) I really appreciate the variations of weather. It makes me appreciate the sun way more. Back in CA, I honestly didn’t notice (and hence don’t appreciate) when the weather is nice. To me, seattle is almost always beautiful, whether it’s drizzling (it rarely full on rains here), sunny, overcast or during the snowpocalypse.
You’ll pay more taxes (percentage-wise) in Toronto for sure. Go to Seattle.
Depends on what you want. You can become citizen of Canada in 3 years or so. If you are in Toronto. Where as you are stuck with Visa issues in Seattle
Toronto is objectively a bigger, cleaner, and more diverse city. The difference in TC is significant though, 140k CAD is like 100k USD. After taxes, you would be making close to 2x as much in Seattle. After tax Ontario est. = 75k USD After tax WA est. = 130k USD
If you consider cost of living to be around 60k per year in both places, savings in Toronto is 15k vs 80k in Seattle
Go to Seattle for a change, save up some money - then when your soul yearns for Toronto again (which if you liked it, while going to UToronto - it will) you can always go back. Also my theory is that salaries in Toronto will equalize more in the future.
Canada has no cap for tech visas therefore low salaries. Not going to equalize.
Move to Seattle . Experience working in America . If you do not like it you can always go back.
Born and raised in Toronto. Moved from Toronto to Seattle 10 years ago for my career. Don’t regret that decision one bit.
Toronto has much better life than Seattle, if you are single.
Agreed. I've lived in both. Toronto is far more exciting to live in. Seattle is just "meh". The only reason I left was TC gap was huge back then (so no regrets there). Now that gap is smaller, I want to move back.
