2019 reminder: it’s just a ride
All you kids worried desperately about TC and pay grades so you can buy expensive cars and other toys while renting some rent-seeking leech’s prop13-protected property to keep up with your toxic coworkers and the fucked up, materialism-fixated, toxic social environment of the Bay Area need to get a grip. It’s just a ride. Find a way to have love in your life and remember that a lot of you will die by your fifties. Yes, you, runner vegan guy. Yes, you, skinny fat late-night cider guy. Yes, you, guy who has gotten fat sitting in front of a screen all day. Yes, you, white middle manager guy thinking about trying out a rinse to hide the grey. Yes, you - all of you. It’s just a ride. Healthy or unhealthy, non-smoker or toker, fat or skinny, daily gym rat and obese television binger: when the scythe swings it gets the people who “deserve it” and a hell of a lot of people that don’t. You’re going to get sick and die someday. People die early. People die late. You may wake up tomorrow with a heart valve issue, with a lump on your side that turns out to be liver cancer, with melanoma or just plain killed by one of the thousands of Bay Area assholes who turn their cars into unguided missiles as the fuck with their phones while hauling ass on 101 because they “can do it unlike most people.” You May have a seizure and find out you have an inoperable, invasive temporal lobe tumor. You may have APoE and already notice cognitive decline at 48 despite no family history of Alzheimer’s, early onset or otherwise. The statistics apply to everyone on this ride. I am in my early 40s and lost two friends this year from the same age group to unexpected illness and an accident. The statistics applied to them. They apply to you. Some of us are in positions where we have to worry about things like this. So while I agree with your sentiment and would love to obsess a little less about money, etc. some people don’t have the luxury to say fuck it like you are suggesting.
My tech lead passed away this year in his late 40s unexpectedly.
