Ok but new grads only make a new grad salary for a couple of years and then they move up. I don't think new grads need to be able to afford more than a middle class life immediately after college. Janitors and other workers fall into this 300k bucket give or take but I dont think anyone working as a janitor expected to live beyond middle class.

I think saving enough is what people should aim for. Building generational wealth is what's fun.

Does everyone move up at the FAANGs? There are only so many management spots compared to the number of non-management workers. At my company only about 10-20% get to move up; everyone else stays at a salary that never gets much higher than about 30% above what a new grad makes. The supply of hard-working young talent is just too big.

Fangs have dual ladders so people can stay ICs instead of moving to management. From what I've seen around 20% of company is of manager level or IC equivalent and above. These people will make at least 100% more than new grad. At senior manager or IC equivalent you can be looking at 200-400% of new grad.

This is for TC, salary won't be that much higher as Fangs and other tech companies pay more percentage in stock as you move up. Notable exception is Netflix where you can opt for all cash.

Build more houses. Build up. Cost of living will go down.

I'm not against building I was pointing out that development is next to impossible. All available land is already developed, new development process takes years of paperwork and fighting mobs, and you cannot build up because it blocks my views or creates a shaddow. The alternative is more likely.

Cities evolve and all the "not in my back yard" people of SF are ruining the progression of the city.

That's exactly what happened in Australia. Cost of living has dropped since 2010 thanks to ever lowering rental cost.

Let me guess Australia has great attitude towards developing/building up their cities?

If we reach consensus on whether or not it is middle class, it doesn’t change anything.

Most people earning 300k don’t have outsized control of our political system. People earning about that don’t hold much power as a bloc.

A person making 300k has as much influence as someone making 50k. You need to be 8-digits and up wealthy to be relevant.

Maybe 300k is middle class because almost half of it goes to taxes?

It's just the housing that costs higher in SF/NYC. Food, groceries and clothing cost almost the same all over the US. A sweater in Macy costs the same in SF/NY than that in Mississippi. Same for pasta, fruit, veggie, burger, etc.

Sure, say you use 10 gallons of gas a week so it's just $20 a week, or $80 a month. But ur paycheck in SF per month far exceeds that of Atlanta.

Lol there is no Walmart in SF. Plus I haven't seen milk that's cheaper than 4 bucks per gallon

There are several Walmarts in East Bay. Again, the food cost increase is just a fraction of the total salary bump you get. Let's put it this way, a big Mac or Chipotle cost almost the same price in SF than that in the middle of nowhere.

I agree with that. IMO apart from rent nothing else is significantly more expensive. But in SF cheap stores like Walmart is almost non existent. It's full of wholefoods etc.

Travel a bit more. Literally everything is more expensive in SF/Bay Area market and it compounds over time.

300k with 50%+ tax really doesn't go that far. Thanks benevolent overlords!

Yes if includes homeownership. Otherwise 300K is enough to fly business class every trip.
