A different approach to evaluating compensation

Comparing numbers doesn’t give you a good idea of actual compensation. Instead of posting your actual salary/compensation package, why not include cost of living, average cost of a 3 bedroom/2 bath house (average accommodation for a family in most areas), or even just the cost of a gallon of gasoline. For instance, I’m in the top 5% in my area in terms of salary. However, I’m in the bottom 5% compared to most people on here. I’m extremely happy with my compensation as the standard cost of living around here is very low. The house mentioned above would be about 1.5 years worth of my salary (+/- 10%). I’m sitting at nearly 4x the average salary of my area. Just food for thought. The number doesn’t mean much without the extra comparisons. It might also help other people evaluate potential jobs in your area. Edit: TC: $83k Texas Panhandle YOE: 5 ***Average cost of a 3 bd/2 bath: $115,000***

What’s your TC? Where do you live? How many YOE? Please help others evaluate jobs in your area!

I make $83k/yr, I live in the Texas Panhandle (I work remotely most of the time and get to travel fairly often), and I apologize but I’m new here. What is YOE? I’m a data scientist and frequently do consulting work as a mechanical engineer, data scientist, and bioinformatician. The TC above doesn’t include my consulting work.

Come on your a “data scientist “ I’m sure you can infer what it means, or you know google...

This is nothing new. People here have been asking for location and YOE in addition to TC long ago. No one really assumes you're making 300k+ in some unknown city.

Op makes so much more than me.

You work for Google? I figured they would have higher compensation packages. Are you out on the west coast or somewhere else?

West cost. Your income measured in housing you can buy is higher than mine.

Ideally, if ease of reporting wasn’t an issue, instead of units of $ we would do units of $yrs where $yr is the yearly cost of living in your area. So: 240k TC in Bay Area with 3k rent, 1k expenses = 240/48 $yrs = 5$yrs —And— 105k TC in Texas with 750 rent, 1k expenses = 105/21 $yrs = 5$yrs
