AOC Reaction to Amazon

Fascinating logic - New York was going to give Amazon roughly a 10% discount on its 20 year tax horizon. AOC thinks she should take this now non existent revenue and spend it on teachers? Why would you need teachers if people don’t have a job when they graduate? I mean, besides bartending.

2.5M taxable income (multiplying out the $100k x 25k jobs) is a vvvv diff number than $30B and remains not significant by nyc standards. i know i’m not backing up my claims here bc i’m not on blind to persuade anyone about how bad amazon is but i’m happy they’re not coming and i stand by it

That number of jobs would have a very noticeable impact on the NYC economy and you'd be incredibly ignorant to say otherwise. It would alone represent a half a percentage point increase in NYC metro GDP by the time the project was done.

(assuming 100% incrementality which would not be the case obviously and ignoring the cost of bringing that many new people into the city)

I'm no fan of AOC, but for all those bashing her and calling her stupid, a friendly reminder that she is way more successful than virtually everyone on this thread.
Even at FANG, we are just doing a very mundane 9-5 job, while she is a congresswoman with millions of followers at just 30!

When “truth” as you or she sees it is mixed in with things that are false or wrong, your message gets drowned out in the noise of people calling you out where you displayed ignorance. If she was buttoned up tight on what she was supposed to know to do her job, people would focus solely on the merit of what she was saying. Instead, she can’t even name the three branches of government and that becomes the narrative that surrounds her.

Yup neoliberal centrism - the ruling consensus for the last few decades in both parties.

Let’s see what the DNC track record is:

      -Supporting the war on terror
-Voting for increased immigration restrictions and border patrol
      -bailing out the banks
      -3 strikes laws
-incentivized prison construction by the states
-increased ability to apply the death penalty (ironically Republican governors have put a pause or moratorium of death penalty in several states)
-increasing police personnel and legal powers at all levels of government
-eliminating cash assistance programs, kicking people off welfare rolls
      -deregulation of telecom etc
-giving environmental posts to politicians that are funded by oil companies.
-Obama’s energy policy which increased fossil fuel production while cloaking this by giving some money to alternatives.
      -austerity policies
-blaming gay marriage for Bush’s re-election.
      -praising Alan Greenspan
-putting neoliberal (and sexist) Larry Summers in charge of White House Econ policy in two admins.

Oh-oh, I know, they often say don’t be rude to trans people or don’t be racist so the media says they are the “left” option🙄

AOC doesn’t have a clue about economics, at this rate people are going to vote for trump again. Dems be careful about radical socialists. She wants to pay people who are unwilling to work. Unable is ok but unwilling is going too far.

They are in the exact same situation they were 3 months ago. Amazon is the one who got fucked with damaged PR for taking NYC at its word and not taking into account how deep the swamp is.

I’m on AOC’s side on this one. Corporate welfare is still welfare, but for those that need it least. Whether it’s a sports team getting public money for a stadium or amazon asking for incentives; I’m against it. In a free market corporations need to be able to thrive or fail on their own.

While I agree in principle with companies not getting handouts, bailouts, subsidies, etc, they were being offered a short term tax break as opposed to straight up cash. Do you consider taxes to be a free market thing at the level that NY state taxes? A lot of people would disagree with that, especially as high as taxes are in NY in general and how inefficiently they use the money.

It’s better known as a “volume discount.” It gives an entity leverage to receive better pricing.

Companies will do the same as people and go where they are treated best.

Can anyone confirm that the Amazon tax deal will result in a net loss in revenue or just a smaller gain?

I'm not in favor of corporate welfare but a tech campus full of engineers will almost certainly be on the giving side in terms of taxation.

Net loss in revenue for NYC? Of course it will. The 20 year tax revenue from 25K people earning $150K would easily be $30B, not including the multiplier effect.

This is typical of Liberals. Kill something that had money allocated for it but then try to claim it as their own. That is precisely what I heard regarding killing the tax cut. They wanted to take the $1.5T and give everyone free healthcare with it despite it only being $150B per year that would make close to no impact on anything.

Not wut. It is real. Money is set aside for a specific purpose and rather than say “let’s not do that because it is too expensive” and return the money they say “and let’s do this really expensive thing instead”.
