Expect an offer from Microsoft for L67. Is that a up level or moving sideways. mentors suggesting not to move unless there is a partner level role (68) to adequately compensate for the move away from AWS given my tenure there. Years w/ AWS: 8 Total YOE: 15
TC?
Partners come to Amazon as directors.
The L8 band is pretty wide. And partners range from 68-70. I was curious about just the L7 to 68 move
I always thought that partner was level 80 - keep dreaming about those partner retreats.
It’s a lateral move. L68 would be hard to get if you’re not L8.
Agreed. It’s lateral. L7 Amazon = L67 (and sometimes L66) Microsoft. L68 would be a move up. I’ve also heard L68 has a forced attrition rate. You may struggle some with the less intense, less metrics-driven culture. Otherwise, it’s a great move.
it's kind of lateral. L67 comp can get pretty deep into the amazon L8 band, so while the level is "lateral", the comp increase can be meaningful. your next question is... if comp can get deep into the amazon L8 band, why do people consider it a lateral move? levels.fyi has the L67 band mapped well, from a compensation perspective it's a high amazon L7 to a low amazon L8. what that means in reality is that good amazon L7s will leave for a microsoft L67 role only if they get compensated like a junior L8. good amazon L8s will (almost) never leave for a microsoft L67 role because the comp would be equivalent. good amazon L8s will only leave for L68+ roles. so when folks from Amazon go to MSFT, L7s leave for L67 roles, and L8s leave for L68+ roles. however, when folks from MSFT go to Amazon, L67s leave for L8 roles. so "lateral" depends on the direction of travel. (for what it's worth, i've never seen an Amazon L7 move into a MSFT L68+ level role)

Where do you get menthors?
AWS L7 to MSFT L68 moves are rare. L68 is a partner level and the approval process to hire someone at a L68 is too complex unless the individual is really worth it. From a comp perspective, you can almost always make L7 an offer which is much more than what they get at L67. I have L67s in my org that were L7s at AWS.
IMO, It's better to be over compensated than over leveled.
