Achievements later in life?

What did you (40+ range) achieve later in life that seemed unattainable or unthinkable before. And what happened along the way, how did you make it happen? Examples: * Mastering an instrument or a sport * MBA from a top school * Starting a company or a small business * Drastic career change * Make peace with relatives * Achieving athlete level in a new sport

Not quite 40yo, but finished my PhD at 34.

Congratulations. I finished school late and did not have the stamina to go for a PhD anymore, thought I’d be too old (34 when finishing it). Many years later, I tend to think that that was too narrow in thinking. All the best, kudos to you!

Career progression is the most common. Most become management or a key individual contributor

I watched my Mom get over her cycles of depression. In her 30s this was a regular thing and now she is stable and has much more spunk and joy, this change started around mid 40s she also suddenly became amazing at interior design and she stopped getting emotional when other people didn’t approve of her - now she has more of a “fuck off” attitude This was all in her mid 40s. Proud of her to see these awesome achievements. She has also stuck with her job in teaching for years. People in the community love her and always wave and talk to her in public places like the mall, grocery stores, Starbucks. I think that’s pretty awesome to be well loved! This particular pattern started in her late 30s.

I’m so glad you wrote this. Thank you for a great example of an amazing personal breakthrough. You must be very proud and frankly relieved.

My dad changed his 23 yrs career, at age 40, so that he could provide highest education for us. He essentially risked his career and life to see us successful.

He had a stable job, and became individual consultant

It sounds cliche for this forum, but the level of TC is way beyond what I thought I'd ever reach. When I turned forty, I thought I was pretty close maxed out at $185k and a VP role at a startup. If I moved to a bigger company, I thought I could maybe hit $250k some day and afford a small place in the city to live in. 5 years later and after discovering Blind I've more than tripled my income, am not sweating paying for college, and am thinking about fulfilling that goal of buying in the city. Follow your dreams. You can reach your goals. I'm living proof. Beefcake. BEEFCAKE!!!
