Been at same company for over 5 years and promoted and recognized for my work consistently. From the outside others may see me as successful but my job is now mentally unhealthy for me but I don’t have a plan B. I have sufficient savings to not work for extended period of time. Did you regret leaving without a job? How did you deal with anxiety during job search? How did you explain your departure and gap in work? Thanks for your advice.
I’ve rage quit several times. Always ended up in a better spot 💪🏼
How did you explain your quit when interviewing? Was it not a red flag? I’m considering rage quitting.
I think offer negotiations are a lot harder later
The opposite my friend. You have time to interview at many places.
Depends on your personal situation. If married + kids I think it's irresponsible to leave without something else lined up.
Yep, but I was single at the time. The break was nice and allowed me to recover from a toxic job.
My understanding is that it is much harder to find the next job when you’re unemployed. I’d suggest a leave of absence if you’re burned out, otherwise start applying then take some time off to do onsite interviews
It depends on each person's circumstances. If the toxic job is so toxic that you feel nothing is going right, the question is how long can you sustain in the toxic situation. Have you heard of the boiling frog syndrome?
All depends on how easy it is for you to get the next job. If it is easy, then quitting is fine because you can be fairly sure you will have another job and multiple offers can offset the loss in leverage of not having an existing job. On the other hand, if your job is truly horrible, it makes sense to quit then as well, your health is more important than money. Also, I've done this a couple times and come out ahead both times, but that's mostly due to being in such an in-demand field.
Don’t. I’ll recommend assuming that you don’t have the option to quit. Then think about the things you will do to make yourself happier, and work on a plan on finding the job as soon as you can. Set timelines for the plans. That will give you a relief from yes or no anxiety you currently are in, and give you something positive to look forward to. I know it is easier said than done, but it is worth a try.
Thanks. Good tip!
You should at least be interviewing. It feels great to quit abruptly when you have offers coming down the pike.
Have you considered taking a leave of absence?
Curious why you recommend this
A leave of absence preserves your job while still allowing you to take a break to reground yourself.
