After 2 Netflix interviews I said I wasnt interested. Bad career decision?

Current TC: 190k in Atlanta. Netflix hits me up for a position in LA. Seemed cool, with hints of high TC but no specifics. They wanted to fly me out to LA for the next interview but I decided not to pursue. Mainly because LA traffic is even worse than ATL, has a much higher cost of living, and my spouse has a good job here and doesn't want to move. Questions: was this a bad career move? If so, would reaching back out to Netflix ever be a viable option if we (my spouse and I) changed our mind about living in LA?

Depends on how you did it, hope you kept it professional. Might’ve been worth mentioning your reason (location)

I kept it professional and stated the reason. I wonder if reaching back out would make me seem wishy washy / indecisive.

I think its totally valid. 190k is good $ in atlanta, especially with a 2nd income. Now, if for some reason you had a passion for netflix / their tech stack and always wanted to live in LA, you may regret it

Good choice 190k in Atlanta is very decent Even if Netflix offers 400-450k, won’t be great and then your spouse may get time to find job Great house in Atlanta in very good localities would be 500-600k but in LA would be more than double of that

Nah. No regrets. Always leave the door open for reconsidering in the future. Companies should understand high TC isn't everything for many people. We haven't yet seen how attractive those companies appear in bear markets.

You can always move anytime from LA to Atlanta. But it is almost impossible to move from Atlanta to LA with your savings from Atlanta. Always take the highest paying job in more expensive location. If you can make it in LA then you can move pretty much anywhere later

Igneous Systems riVv21 Aug 26, 2018

I don't know that you can say "always" do anything.

Apple: You might be single. When you settle down in a place for a couple of years, you make friends and acquaintances. Your family makes friends and acquaintances. Your kids start liking their school and activities offered in the area. You can move, but leave your family or your heart behind.

Good choice op. 190k in Atlanta is equivalent to 400k in California. Problems in California are housing crisis, terrible traffic, everything is expensive.

Amazon Ben Dover Aug 26, 2018

Stay in Atlanta if you like it. 190k there is more than 400k in LA. Plus all the getting used to west coast and the rest.

I am in a similar situation as you are. For the long term growth I wanted to be somewhere in the west coast, either Bay Area or Seattle. We live in Chicago and my wife works as a lead mechanical engineer in a heavy duty truck manufacturing company here. In January I interviewed in a FANG company and got rejected. So I accepted an offer from Expedia. Within couple of months I had an interview with a major Seattle company and got an offer. My wife wasn’t willing to move. But we talked about future and what makes sense for our family. We searched together for her job there in Seattle, sketched out all the scenarios and made a plan including best case / worst case scenario. She was convinced that there is a path forward, albeit difficult. She agreed for me to take the job. The decision is difficult. I am having cold feet every waking hour and keep thinking whether I made the right decision. Frankly speaking, I don’t know. Until we move there and try it out we can’t tell. But given the situation we are in I think we are making the right decision and we will face it together. That’s all that matters.

Tough move man. Did your wife find a job yet? Good luck!

Expedia conbro Aug 26, 2018

Not yet, but she has an on-site next week.

You have not burned any bridges. If you change your mind in the future, we will not have any hard feelings.
