Airbnb hiring

Is airbnb having a hiring freeze? I applied to a few positions more than a couple of months ago, havent heard back anything yet. They generally get back within a couple of weeks. A couple of friends in airbnb mentioned that hiring departments have been unresponsive, even to them. Anyone had any idea about any such thing?

So you asked your friends at Airbnb and don't believe them? And you think Blind will be any better? No matter what we say here, I'd sure as hell trust my own friends more.

I asked them and they were unable to get any info from the hr. Thought someone else might know something, that they weren't able to find out.

Had a similar experience recently.. didn't end up even getting a phone screen. Wound up with offers from Facebook, uber, and box and just moved on

Definitely no hiring freeze, Iā€™m doing tons of interviews. Itā€™s very difficult to get an interview, thatā€™s been the case for a long time. As for the internal transfers - there was a big reorg going on (done now I think?) so certain teams werenā€™t sure of their headcount. You generally get hired into the company so it shouldnā€™t affect interviewing tho.

Do you have any insight on the methodology for why itā€™s so hard to get an interview? Iļø havenā€™t personally applied but have had several friends who went on to be directors and other higher level positions at big tech companies(not FANG big) but couldnā€™t even get a phone screen at AirBnb.

Airbnb Annydoo Nov 4, 2017

I donā€™t have any insider insight, sorry. Just an uninformed guess though - it might just be a matter of the crazy volume of applications that we get for each open position, and the fact that there are only ~600 engineers available to do interviews. The volume of interviews that every engineer does is way higher than anywhere else Iā€™ve seen already, so recruiting might be making cuts before the phone screen to reduce that. Getting a referral from someone thatā€™s actually worked with you here would help for sure though.

The interview load is crazy, and I have had my own referral being rejected without even a recruiter phone call, so that's the norm unfortunately.

Same here, however it was a new grad position. OP needs to specify if it is entry level.

It is true that you may never hear back from Airbnb. I have friends who said the same too. So sorry you had to go through this experience! I was told that whether or not you hear back or how soon you get contacted depends on who the recruiter is... Also not all is well within the company at the moment. Lots of changes, reorg, resignations, and culturally damaging stuff happening that could be short term speed bumps / long term growth decelerators. It is a company trying to find its foot and the morale is 100x lower than it was compared to its halcyon day as a valley unicorn. Some people like myself are still holding out hopes and doing what we can to build and grow the biz but the company appears to undoing all of the great work and foundation laid from years prior. Would suggest you stay patient, get an insider to help but also look elsewhere. All the best Carvana.

Can you elaborate a little? Why is morale 100x lower?

Airbnb recently fired its food team. All of them though they were offered new roles in the vendor company. This was one of the many sore points employees had with the company. The culture was f**ked up and one of the cofounders said they would do something but the culture is just worsening by the day. Old timers have no career progression or promotion opportunities and while the company is becoming bigger, it is becoming less tight knit too. Going to work involves dealing with politics, red indian chiefs and sometimes, childish leads. The multiple reorg has created more confusion than clarity and people i talked to are feeling stuck and demoralized. 2018 will be the year of reckoning for the company. I try to keep my chin up but its also getting harder by the day. I harbor hopes that senior leaders will listen and i stay optimistic but life ain't easy. There are some folks who love the culture (no accountability, good perks and nonchalant life) and there are some really smart hardworking people around. I really hope that they stay or that i leave before they do. Thats my two cents anyways. I suggest you talk to more people about their experience but generally the longer people stay with the company, the more disillusioned they become. I am not sure if it is the same at Uber but would love to hear your views too.

Can someone refer me a software engineer position at Airbnb? 4+ years experience, C++, backend person

Airbnb UserFy Jan 15, 2018

Why arenā€™t your friends referring you? Having an internal referral will guarantee a response.
