Airbnb phone interview

Heard that it is pretty brutal, hard questions expected to be solved with running tests. Can anyone who recently interviewed with them chime in about his/her experience? Thanks.

No. You are not simply *expected* to solve the questions. If the interviewer says anything to you after you've been given each question about your code, you will lose. You are timed. The top N people will proceed.

I was given a hard one. Like the knapsack problem, but harder. You have a given amount of money to spend. What is the full set of menu combinations you can buy for exactly that amount. There is an unlimited supply of each item and you can order as many of a given item as you want. I didn’t code the core algo but spoke to its possibilities, I ended the call 5 minutes early. 30 minutes later I was sent an invite to try again. When that day and time came, I wasn’t called but was texted an hour late once he was free. I know I’ll fail and I wasn’t in the mood, so I wrote the recruiter to cancel my application and I’ll try again some other day. I had already planned to stop interviewing for a while, so I don’t need this as another failed practice round. So I can say that Airbnb was by far the most difficult. And also a disappointing interviewee experience. Congratulations to those who succeed. The funny thing is that Airbnb’s challenges are probably far easier than similar tech companies. Their scaling needs are minimal, it’s fairly static data, simple search criteria and features, a theoretically low volume of transactions, etc. Still a good business idea, but technically speaking they need few senior engineers.

I had the same exact question! Seems like their question bank is pretty small.

I failed the Airbnb phone screen as well even though I got to a working solution.

I had a similar experience with Airbnb where, I too failed the phone screen even when I solved the problem.

Did they not accept even after giving an optimized solution ?
