Started this job as a test automation dev (was hoping for a jr. dev role) several months ago, it's my second job out of college and my first one in a "real" tech company and not winging it alone at a tiny finance place making LoB software. It's been a while since I started and I'm still just making fixes to scripts in our automated test software and our .NET libraries. No one seems to know what to do with me and I haven't done much else since I was brought on, let alone improved. There are also a bunch of little things in my role that are driving me to make this post. Meanwhile, the recent grads who were brought on as full devs sound like they have sufficient guidance and things to help them improve; one example I've overhead is that some of them are working on a log parser of some sort - nothing groundbreaking, but it looks like they're on some kind of mentorship track and doing other things in the dev realm in the company. Am I in a bad spot? My friend made a few suggestions, one of the most positive being to start asking for work that can't be completed over one sprint (2 weeks). Does that sound realistic?
Things can be better, I won't lie. Taking ownership of feature work that can span more than a sprint is a decent start. But moreso than anything, I'd highly recommend talking to your manager. Set up a meeting with them and explain how you feel you're not growing in your career and that you'd like to learn and contribute more. Ask them what you need to do to get to a place you can start doing that in case they feel you're not up to scratch. Communication is key
Also get a meeting with Skip level tell him/her about you wanting more responsibility and work.
i actually had a conversation with my manager a few months ago about it, wasn't anything too long but he said he'd try to get me more tasks, but growth didn't seem to register as part of the convo in his head. I'll meet with him again, though, and keep what you said in mind
