Why are you getting an L4 offer when you have a PhD and 2 years experience?
I have seen lot's of research scientist with Phds as l4. It's very common in that space. For other roles it's different
Rs pay scale is higher
Not sure. And the order is 2 years + PhD..just finishing up the PhD program, and that might have been a factor.
L4 is for college grad...Hope you can get L5
Most companies treat folks till 6 months after graduation as new grad, plus 2 years isn’t a lot of experience. As long as salary is good, go for L4 and you can get yourself a big hike at L5. L4 and L5 salary bands overlap each other, so if you are high end of L4 it’s worth it.
From what I read, it looks like the level is not negiotiable, but comp is. Any ideas on TC for early L5's in the bay ? Is there a max for L4?
In seattle max comp for L5 is 180k. I would assume it would be around 200k in bay area.
You mean max for L4 ?
You should push for L5. I don’t think you have much room for negotiation as L4.
Do you know of cases where people were able to change the level ? From answers on the app and otherwise, seems they don't change it.
Don't take it. In most cases just a PhD makes l5.
Is the job family applied scientist or SDE? That matters. Amazon used to hire fresh PhD as L4 AS, and this is still the case in many teams whereas some teams started to hire them as L5. AS has broader salary band than SDE, so high L4 AS would not be too bad compared to low L5 SDE.
It's SDE family and not AS.
I see. I sometimes see PhDs get hired as L4 SDEs as well especially when their subject of study was not CS, but most of them got promoted to L5 quite soon.
If it was advertised L5 don’t accept L4. They don’t think you’re good enough and are settling on you. That’s insulting. You’ll spend the next 18 months proving yourself.
