That is top of band for L6 SDM. Take it!! If you try to negotiate, you might come across as greedy to your future manager!

      @Microsoft

10 years at Akamai vs 4 years at Amazon. Also more years of experience is just an appeal to authority fallacy. Read up on it.

'In this case OP was probably downleveled, so HM gave top of band for L6."
You are not caught up.. L6 can touch 400 in case of a down level.. know it from a "friend"

"If I get push back for more money, that just shows the new hire is an idiot with no idea about bands or just plain greedy and will leave soon."
Yikes, try to have a level head as a manager.. your direct reports are staking part of their career on you..

L6 tct is not 400. Tc can touch 400 easily but the target band max is at 370.

We are talking about OTC (OFFER TC) not ETC (EARNED TC)

What I’m saying is I’m hiring the best. I expect them to want to be paid and paid well. They don’t know the bands. At no point did OP say he thought that was max, nor did HM say “that’s all I got”. My comment about tenure was for experience in hiring a number of people in different roles, not authority over anyone. When I said “weak” it’s in regards to wanting the people working for me to strive for more. But then again, you’re talking about technical/engineering roles. I’ve hired for sales engineering, marketing, product, and sales roles. My perspective on a candidates negotiation might be different.

Pardon the grammar error, always a lay-up to knock someone on those.

    • 6 years?
      Sep 15, 2018
    • Amazon BrookApple
5 first year, 15 second year, 20 every 6 month after.
      Sep 15, 2018
    • That's 4 years then, not 5.
      Sep 17, 2018
    • Akamai Technologies Ham Bone
      Nope, 5% year 1, 15% year 2, 20% each 6 months of year 3 and 4

      @BeKind12, 5 was a typo. It’s 4.

How does an L6 SDM offer nearly double an L5 SDE offer? Makes no sense at all.

You are seriously underpaid my friend!

You’re comparing bottom of L5 range to top of L6 range... are you really surprised? That’s basically equivalent to comparing a junior SDE to a principal SDE.

Also, this isn’t a manager vs SDE thing. L6 SDEs make just as much as L6 SDMs - the band is pretty much the same.

L6 band is actually too low. L5 band is fine for a 3-4 YOE engineer, but not fine for a 7-10 YOE engineer. Levels need recalibration.

Congrats on the offer!! I got a 160/375(over 2 yrs)/550 without any competitive offer a month back. So you can definitely push the limits on all fronts except maybe base.

That is pretty good. I tried to ask for 400k they would not budge. Stuck at $370

      Thanks folks

Homer, Rvn did either of you have competing offers? What level at MS?
      Sep 15, 2018
    • Microsoft homer
Yes I was surprised too, specially without competing offers. However, they didn’t budge when I presented them with other FAANG offers later.

    • Microsoft lesbleus
Amzn L6 SDM can be pushed up to 400k (similar to @homer numbers) - especially if you are high L65 at msft or a L66 getting underleveled to L6
      Sep 15, 2018
    • Microsoft homer
L64 when I got the offer, L65 now. I did ask for the next level, knowing I’m not yet L7 material.
      Obviously they didn’t agree 😝😝.

Unlikely they won’t hire you at the top of band unless you are inches from L7

Is L7 is an M2 always? I don't have enough experience for that.

Basically bottom part of L7 is M2

So I got 335 out of that and you say youre making 350 at ms? Why in earth would you move to Amazon for less TC?

345 is Amazon Comp. Very similar to Ms with SSA. But there's no guarantee of SSA next year.

Solid offer for Seattle, congratulations. If this the initial offer you could negotiate on the signon and stock a bit more(15/20k year). If you a competing offers that will help. As previous comments mentioned this is at the higher end of the range for Seattle. Got a similar offer 2 yrs ago if the stock continues to do well like the last couple of years you will be fine.
