Amazon SDE2 Offer

GoDaddy / Eng imposter2
Apr 10 38 Comments

This is the initial offer I received. Haven't negotiated it yet. Wanted to contribute numbers to the community, as well as ask how I can actually go.

Position: SDE2
YoE: 3 years
Location: Seattle

Base: 150k
Sign in bonus: 60k | 40k
RSU: 90 shares / ~160k

TCT (mentioned by recruiter): 220k

Notes:
1) I know I crushed the interview
2) Should have at least 1 competing offer soon
3) Decision deadline has been made to sound firm (was initially 4 business days, I asked for more time so they gave me 6 business days).

Feedback is appreciated :)

Lol I meant: how has your experience been at Amazon? Do you regret joining as a new grad (if you had other offers)?

Oh, haha. No it’s been really great. Learned a ton with great mentors and managers. Now things are taking a turn and want to leave. AWS

Ha, I updated the post to round the numbers a bit to maintain anonymity.
Probably over paranoid, but I thought an Amazon recruiter would be able to identify me with the exact numbers. But that's for the input :)

      LP = Leadership Principles.

FWIW, they most certainly do not consider LP to be BS internally. If you go in with that mentality, you might not like it very much.

I like the leadership principles for the most part. I just meant the way they test you on them is BS.

They ask you about your past projects and see if your explanation aligns with any of LP. I think this is fair. Is there any other better way to test it?

It's not actually a discussion on your past projects. If they did it that way, like walking through your last 5 or so years of work, figuring out what you liked the most, the least, where you failed, etc, that would be different. The way they go is "tell me about a time when..." looking for a time you showed a specific quality. I don't see the point in telling the candidate "hey, this is what we're looking for, have anecdotal evidence of possessing these qualities". Like, what's the point of that? Anyone who doesn't display those qualities will still make up a story (since the interview isn't going to verify it) if they want the job.

Don’t join if you have offer from other company

This is what I've heard overwhelmingly. The issue I'm having is that the Amazon offer is in Seattle. Competing offers are in SF. Because of state tax and cost of living differences, I have to take off 15-20% from SF offers to make a real comparison. And if I do that the Amazon offer is way better.

What if you will lose 20% more happiness at Amazon? Really worth it?

Good point. I'm not just earning for myself though. Extra 20% TC could make life more comfortable for my family.

I started at amazon this week, and I gotta say, looking around the cafeteria - folks don’t seem sad or mad. People seem happy. The work my team is doing is super interesting. People all seem very smart and professional. I know that I could run up to some wall where it all shifts but I just really don’t understand why everyone shits on amazon all the time.

Have you worked at any other big companies? I'm sure there are many worse places to work than Amazon. The impression I get is that compared to some of the other larger tech companies, they have the worst benefits and culture (although the culture will vary with team).

Pretty good for YOE, seems in the upper band for SDE 2. Even with a competing offer, its unlikely it will go much higher than this

I thought SDE2 upper band was closer to 250k? There's a comment lower down that suggests the same.

    • Facebook cochococho
Yeah that was my point. It wont go much higher than 220 (maybe 20-30k). You should still try though.
