Amazon vs FB and G compensation difference?

How much am I leaving on the table by being in Amazon? My TCT this year is 240K (125K/120RSU/70Kbonus) @3YOE as a SDE2 in Bay Area.

I feel like I'm working hard and I'm TT but I have a slight feeling that I would been compensated better in FB and G for the things I accomplished. For my promotion all I got was an extra 20K to my salary... No refresher yet and it's been 1.7 years in Amazon already...

I enjoy my work but I just want more. What do you think?

I'm not happy that people are telling me to be happy with what I have 🤨. Why??

Because you are way overpaid for your YoE. ONLY 20k increase? That's higher even in percentage terms than most get.

^ Honestly for the amount of work I put in and influence I've gained on the team, I expect at least a 50K increase. I realize it's subjective but it's how I feel.

I'm not overpaid...2 of my years we're not in FAANG. I've only spent 1.6 years in Amazon...so pretty soon it will be 4 YOE w only 240K TC...I should've been close to 300K by now...I may have to work harder or switch to G or FB.

The market determines your worth @myUe2$ - there's no such thing as overpaid. A store clerk could get paid 500k a year in the future if there was a high demand for it in terms of value to the business and shortage of applicants, and they still wouldn't be overpaid. Get your head out of your ass.

4 years of experience and you think 240K is being underpaid. This is hilarious. Grow up

The biggest difference amongst all these companies is the refreshers. No returning intern promoted to E4 is getting over 300 outside of one time sign on bonuses

The world we live in where a 25yo making 240k thinks hes underpaid because one buddy who claims to have higher comp at FB... chill millennials. You'll get there. Not always overnight. This is what everyone voting to relax is telling you ...

The same world where the average blind person has 8+ YOE making 150k. Definitely an insane world. Not everyone works in fng and it is not the norm

Hey sorry guys I don't mean to flaunt or complain...my intention is to be better. Even if I get Google, I'll still be looking forward to the next level (side business, serious hobby, etc). I'm never content. Maybe it's stressful to live this way but it's just how it is for me.

That's the winning attitude. Don't listen to idiots who advise you to relax.

You are not going to get more than 260-280k TC at FB as an E4. They might give you a one time signing bonus to lure you. Honestly, if you are a TT L5 at 3 YOE it means your manager has faith in you and wants to move you to L6 within the next 12-18 months. You would be a fool to walk away from that for a signing bonus and maybe making E5 at FB.

Yeah FB isn't really as interesting to me as G. Mainly for the WLB.

For those saying I'm leaving greater than 50K on the table, do you have a more accurate amount in mind? Please be honest...

With competing offers yes, otherwise lower

Faster promos at FB, but better WLB and more high level experts at Google. At FB you might have to work with a pretentious E6 TL or manager that knows less than you.

^ No I mean what about TC for Google promo path? Do you get put into the lower band and need to work your way up? Or is it easier just getting hired into a high band?

One reason to be grateful is that compared to 95% of the rest of the world, you’re rich.

There’s only one way to know for sure - interview and find out. If you’re underpaid, bounce. If you fail the interviews, see point 1.

There will always be people who make more than you do. There will also be people who don’t and say they do. Find your inner peace and enjoy life. You’ve been dealt a top 5% or better hand enjoy the ride.

10yoe with LinkedIn, Google, and FB experience here, you probably won't break 300k until high L4 (read: multiple exceeds plus multiple refreshers), I was hovering around 250k for 4 years due to jumping companies to follow my dreams, it's not always about money but if you want to maximize it NEVER take an offer at or below your current level/TC. I did that at G (came in at the top of L4) and didn't get a raise or meaningful equity for 2 years.

As arrogant as this may sound...if I can get TT in Amazon, I feel I can easily get the TT equivalent in Google which should mean a refresh every year right?

I could be completely wrong since I have no idea what Google work is like.

And of course you don't have refreshers yet. You haven't even cleared your whole signing bonus yet. You still get stock every year, what do you mean you don't have refreshers yet? You have 4 years worth of stock that vests every year. You haven't even had half of your stock yet and you want refreshers? You're at the very top of the SDE II band.

Ah. Still not bad, though. Not sure what you mean about refreshers. Refreshers are for when you don't have a vest for the next year, or a smaller than usual vest. Or potentially if the stock tanks, you could get more.

Seattle top is 242, I think.

I don't blame you for wanting to try out other places, though. I want to do the same, but I'm at around 190. I was promoted last year, but it still feels way too low. Interviewed at MS yesterday for a senior position, but they probably won't pay much. Trying at Google next month.

If amazon could get me to 230, I'd stay a lot longer. What sucks about the situation is that my project is amazing.

320 is going to be a real tough sell. If you want that, the best way is to line up about 5 or so offers and get everyone to go up and up and up.

Yeah, I'm Seattle area. Working at AWS AI! Don't want to get more specific than that. But it's a really good opportunity to get some professional experience in the ML space.

With 3 YOE you can easily make around 300K if you switch.

Uh... how? You mean E4 or L4@G? People here are literally telling me they earn below 300..

    • New nGAs07
I have seen new grads being offered 260 at Fb, 250 at Airbnb and 230 at LinkedIn (all including signing bonus and Masters degree). So with 3 YOE these companies should be able to touch 300k, though you will need mutiple offers.

Also if you want to maximize your TC, apply to hedge funds such as Jane Street, Citadel and HRT.

If you get to L6 your comp will be competitive or even greater than google. Big reason being it's harder to get promoted in google, plus the SDE3 scope is larger than L5 at Google (usually)

SDE3 is actually horrible for comp alone if you're an internal promo (mid 200s TCT...yes, really, because it happened to me), but the scope of work can set you up nicely for an up-level outside of Amazon.

I don’t think your total is lagging...maybe the distribution of cash and bonus might be different! Personally I prefer large bonuses in a lump sum - but just my opinion

      Yeah the distribution is fucked in Amazon. 5 / 15 / 40 / 40 says it all...
