used to, but itβs aged badly
What makes you say that? A lot of the issues they deal with are still prevalent today - tax cuts, healthcare, education reform, fossil fuels v/s renewables, social security heading to bankruptcy etc.
We live in a world in which technocratic neoliberalism has objectively failed, Trump is a great indicator of this. The West Wing, more than any other cultural product, glorifies that same neoliberal order that brought us to the point weβre at today and made Trump possible.
No. Sorkin's scripts are great and his dialogue is the oral equivalent of olympic level fencing(Social Network). But the West Wing sucks because the character's are all perfect so there's no arc of character development that is...real. If you want something real that can relate to today's politics there's this show on HBO called House of Saddam.
I don't know that I want to 'relate' to today's politics, would rather escape it. π± π Thanks for the suggestion. π
Veep is an even more accurate representation of todayβs politics
The characters were not perfect, they messed up but cleared it up too. The lines were a class apart, even the critical ones, a mix of wit and wisdom while conveying the gravity. And, they addressed some awesome issues and sometimes accepted that these were difficult problems to solve. Agree that they may have been more liberal and righteous than realistically possible.
I enjoyed the show years ago but I can't help but look back and see how cringe worthy that brand of neoliberalism was. Neoliberalism has failed the average American and that's why the democrats have lost the people's support. The average American can't relate to that elitist smarmy brand of liberalism and is part of the reason for the rise of the far right. It seems like only corbyn or sanders offer alternative positive messages that are still outside of political orthodoxy. There's a good podcast on how the west wing attitude was adopted by mainstream liberals: https://m.soundcloud.com/citationsneeded/episode-51-how-the-west-wing-poisoned-a-generation-of-liberal-minds
Thatβs a great Citations Needed Ep. Highly recommend that people subscribe to that podcast in general.
damn Iβm pleasantly surprised to see a citations needed link on blind this is a good thread
Great show.
I enjoyed it. On an unrelated note, check out Fauda. Truly amazing show.
π
I always saw the show as a liberal fantasy detached from reality.
Watch VEEP! So much better and closer to reality.

Itβs a well written show, but the Trump era has rendered that brand of managerial neoliberalism to the dustbin of history so itβs hard to watch these days.
