Anyone feel like they can do whatever they want at work/self direct completely?

Very little oversight on my team, no code reviews or managers who have a shred of technical ability. Just take us at our word as long as stuff gets done in any reasonable amount of time, but never look at results.

Is this common or did I luck out?

Luck out? Do you really think that helps you up your game?

The implication is that if you aren't being challenged, you aren't growing.

I had full autonomy on the tesla auto pilot team. Sometimes I would push code to production without testing

Higher TC. Knowing what I know now, I wish I hadn't.

Career progression and learning from people better than you is way more valuable than having the option to do a shitty job without being scolded for it at most stages in a career.

I strongly feel that I did better work without a manager breathing down my neck. I'm actually quite proud of my previous work, and continue to receive compliments from my former colleagues. My work at Zillow? I'd be embarrassed if someone saw it.

Sounds like you’re on a crappy team. That sucks. Selfishly, I hope you’re on or otherwise related to the Offers team :p

I have reasonable autonomy and definitely don’t have a manager breathing down my neck, but what OP describes sounds like a technical Wild West free for all, with no code review or oversight and that sounds pretty shitty to me.

I am worried about progression but also feel marginally blessed by freedom to choose my own work

Terrible. 105k base in bay area no sign on. 15k stock that went down 40%. 60 to 80 hour work weeks, no wfh allowed in the org for a while, no 401k matching. I quit and got double the pay elsewhere with actual benefits

Time to experiment on new technologies and get paid for it. I think its awesome. Is that situation specific to your team, or do you get the feeling its company-wide ?
