Which city? How much of a change in TC did you see? How do taxes work in reality? Did you change employers or transfer to a European office? Was getting a work visa an issue? Were you better or worse off after you made the jump?
You will not be double taxed in UK, because taxes are very high here
I’ve considered transferring to our company’s London office. In general, pay is less. Quality of life and work/life balance seem better. I hear taxes are a mess. So much so that our company offeres to pay for an account the first year.
I transferred from MTV to Zurich for Google two years ago. Comp is roughly comparable to the bay area, maybe a tad lower here, taxes are a pain in the ass as a US citizen, Visa was no issue, Google took care of it for me. Not knowing German here makes regular life suck unless you've got a family to hang out with. Lots of great things about being here. Easy to travel around Europe, safe, seasons, great outdoors. Quality of life *might* be better here depending on what you're looking for. But not necessarily. Personally, I prefer the US still... Since I like the convenience of driving, having a big home, way better food, far more conveniences etc. Also another big drawback is Europeans and Swiss in general have very negative opinions of America and Americans, and harbor a certain disdain/arrogance towards us... as if CH is so much better than the US (which it's not). It really rubs me the wrong way sometimes. Compensation for tech outside of Google from what I know is definitely going to be lower here than in the US. Roughly in the low $100k range for mid level engineers, and exceeding $200k is exceedingly rare, even for high level contributors.
Aside: what Google teams are in Zurich?
Many, it's a huge office, thousands people
Stay in US if you want TC, pay is too low in Europe in general. Google Zurich pays maybe comparable to Bay Area if you can get here, but everywhere else it's shit show 100k-150k in Zurich, maybe 200k *tops*, in most of Europe even 100k is hardly possible and taxes aren't that low, plus as a US citizen you will be taxed at least at US level everywhere
Do you live in Zurich or London?
Zurich
