Again, they are not sticker on top of the screen.
The screen surrounding that region on the sides is "extra"

It's not a black bar "on" the screen. It's the extra screen that surrounds the black bar!

Iโ€™m biased. Letโ€™s just get that out of the way. Face auth isnโ€™t new sure, but the way Apple does it definitely is. Apple often isnโ€™t first to anything but we do tend to be much more thorough in implementing things in a user friendly way.

My personal opinion is that itโ€™s not as fast as TouchID. I can usually unlock my phone or authorize Apple Pay while pulling it out of my pocket. Now I have to actually look at my phone. But itโ€™s a good trade off for me personally because always felt the Plus were just a bit too wide.

I think it's cool to be proud of the company you work for, as long as there's something specific you're proud of.

I'm really proud that T-Mobile put out trucks with phones and supplies for Floridians after Irma. I'm proud to work for a company with ethical business practices, a business model that focuses on promoting healthy competition and progress in its industry, and does well by it's employees by encouraging internal promotion and giving good benefits.

Its fine to be proud of your company. Just don't drink the Kool Aid or act arrogant because you feel like your company is somehow special or superior.

Maintaining market share isn't necessarily correlated directly with their innovation and products. It also has to do with brand stickiness and viable alternatives. Yes, apple is doing something right - they aren't changing anything because they realize people don't want change. They like their iPhones the way they are for the most part, they just want flashy new features, better specs, and a bigger status symbol. Thus, the overpriced iPhone X which is just more of the same plus animated emojis.

GIS for 1997 mobile phones. Then look at the first jphone. Now compare the first iPhone and the X. There is no innovation, only added features. User interface is still the same, still more power than need, still getting thinner for some reason. But no innovation.

    • Google savagegrdn
+1000 to fotwenty. This thread is dumb -- phones have changed significantly since the late 90s, they will change again one day, it just probably won't be Apple innovating this time...

    • Microsoft BnMs68
Once iPhone was popular (like very quickly) what's the incentive to change? If there was no new iPhone but a completely new form factor device asking to completely change the way people did computing I think they'd be taking a huge risk. Why take that risk when the chances a majority of your iPhone users will buy a new iPhone at $1k with small feature enhancements and emojis? I feel like apples popularity killed what made it popular.

I guess it's just especially disappointing given the increasing lack of interesting features in their standard model, and the fact that now that they actually have a few things that make the phone interesting, they're charging a nearly unjustifiable premium.

I say nearly because, from a market perspective, they can always depend on their sheep/ecosystem captives.

^did you start looking at stock only for the last few days or something? Literally every single year Apple stock dips after announcement (worse than this usually) because many people who buy stock wants to sell high with no regard to how the product will do, they are there for the rally for pre-announcement hype. After that the hype is gone until product is slowly released and for earnings to come in. The next wave will be earnings report. Apple has climbed significantly every year, because when people actually realize Apple has been beating market expectations every, single, year, that's when true stock value raises.

"The phone to define the next decade"

    - adds less bevel like Samsung
    - face Authenticator like windows hello
    - gimmick face stuff like snap chat.
    - charge a grand like apple
    Sep 12, 2017 3
    • Amazon ValarMorgh
Despite what they say on stage Apple has never been about doing things first. They're all about doing things better.

Samsung's Android skin starts lagging 4 months after purchase of their latest flagship phone. And their bezel less design is no where near as refined (only Essential phone compares).

Never use anything windows in a serious tech achievement discussion this century (I'm quite fond of Windows 10 probably just because of how horrible it's predecessor was) but market fragmentation and availability disqualifies it from comparison.

The "gimmicky stuff" is to showcase their hardware and software. They even demoed Snapchat on stage.

The Galaxy Note 8 is a grand too and was announced before. So not sure why this is a "like Apple" point ...

      Sep 12, 2017
    • Microsoft XCkk42
I agree with all of your points, even though they're a miss regarding my original one (that admittedly was nuanced). They prefaced this announcement by trying to say it's importance will be akin to the original iPhone they announced a decade ago, a true first of its kind and innovative product.
They proceeded to talk about technology that's been in the consumer world for some time now (albeit yes, likely improved.)

Ya it's an admirable iteration, esp compared to years past. But don't try to sell it like it's impact is that of the original iPhone. The innovation isn't there. I mean, are they really telling all of us this is the best they have for the decade? This is their staple innovative achievement for years to come?

btw MS HoloLens has been pretty widely regarded as a said serious tech achievement

"Another company" selling a "similarly priced product before" doesn't all of the sudden relieve Apple from being a notoriously higher priced brand lol

I like Apple. I have been using an iPhone for 7 years now. However, they have all their priorities screwed up.

Jobs integrated mail, phone, camera, video - all in one. The changes in the last few years have had 0 impact on my life. For example, I would have liked to see more stuff that improves work efficiency - perhaps a multi tab. Or even something like a battery life improvement.

They focussed on things like getting animated emojis - something that primarily teens would care about. They don't focus on added functionality for improving productivity. Getting a Face ID to work doesn't help me - I like when I can unlock a phone without it pointing at my face. Why change things that work?
