Ask Facebook to pay back Microsoft sign on bonus

I received an offer from Facebook, and I am wondering if I can ask Facebook to pay Microsoft my sign on bonus as part of the negotiations (I have to pay back the whole bonus). Is it reasonable? Is it something that these companies usually do?

Congratulation. You should definitely be able to negotiate. Btw, how was your interview experience? Share some insights.

Why not just use part of your Facebook signing bonus to pay back Microsoft?

That is how math works out. Unless facebook is matching unvested stock that’s a whole lot of different congrats!

Because Microsoft is asking me to pay the whole amount before taxes (unless it is what HR told me). And signing bonus from Facebook will be deducted with taxes. I was wondering if Facebook can pay that money on my behalf without the signing bonus have to be deducted with taxes. Not sure it is legally feasible, (I know sounds like I am trying to avoid pay taxes)

They ask you for the lump sum ? Not prorated? Also, why did you quit before 1 year?

Microsoft COWk20 OP Mar 20, 2019

Yes, the whole amount. It is how Microsoft signing bonus works. Reasons overall: Shitty team, bad site for development, bad country and Facebook is offering a lot more of money.

Why should they pay it? Give it from your Facebook sign on bonus!

They totally should pay it. You sound like a real winner, lol.

So you are effectively asking them to pay for your ms sign-on. Now do you think that’s reasonable?

Facebook _-____-__ Mar 20, 2019

Yes, it’s totally reasonable.

Microsoft COWk20 OP Mar 20, 2019

I think it is. For example, Facebook pays things such as the money you have to pay when you break a contract before agreed time, for example, when renting a house for a year and you left before.

Of course you can negotiate that and they should go for it.

In this thread: Haters! Haters everywhere! You can 100% ask them to pay your obligations. It's why the signing bonus exists.

Try your best to get it from Facebook while retaining yours at msft. It is possible, my ex-employer didn’t ask me to pay back the relocation cost which I should according to offer, while I got higher sign on from my new employer to offset it.

Tell them you are leaning towards accepting it but that you’ll have to repay 25k or whatever it is so that is troubling you. Ask if there is any room to stretch different parts of your tc to offset it.

Ask MS to prorate it. It’s fine to use this to negotiate.
