I have just completed full onsite and was asked to provide info for background check even before the interview. The interview went well. I am worried now exactly when this check will happen. I don't even know the offer yet, and I don't want my current employer to know I am interviewing. Also, I had 3 titles in last 5 years at my present company. But I condensed it to 2 titles to save myself writing (was bad idea). Do they also check every title in order at one employer as well? I'll post my offer once I have numbers. TC:210k Thank you!
I wouldn't worry too much about titles, at our company, HR system title (job code) and address book title bear little resemblance and I doubt company shares either with external parties
Why are you worried? This is just checking criminal record and the fact that you worked where you say you worked. They’re not calling your old managers and asking them about the authenticity of your resume ;-) It’s done by an external company usually
Background checks are all BS these days. It’s mainly to check for criminal records (I think California is trying to remove that part too). If they call your previous employers, it’s a series of yes and no only answers to verify employment dates and title. I don’t think they can even ask if you were terminated now. Asking previous compensation ranges is also off limits as well.
Thanks folks, I was worried by the fact that moment some HR gets the background check call then HR might tell informally my manager. After all nothing stops HR telling the manager from address book. Also, this could be the nice way for companies to identify the flight risk employees. I am taking out battles for my next promo in Dec and don't want to risk it.
Just don’t go posting any that a company may seem too edgy on Twitter or FB.
At a previous company I had some generic title like “technical staff II” and had to change it to what position I was aiming for like “Senior Systems Engineer”. Early on I made the mistake of putting “technical staff” on my resume and no one would give me an interview
They don't check that level of detail. Your current employer won't give that level of detail. They'll only tell whether you were employed there or not
