This is going to have a bigger impact than Muslim ban because most Chinese grads are directly piped into tech industries. It really sounds like a big witch hunt. Do you really feel your Chinese coworker sitting next to you might be a spy? Do you also feel your Muslim coworker in your team might be a terrorist that will attack blow up a bomb? https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.ft.com/content/fc413158-c5f1-11e8-82bf-ab93d0a9b321
Ban all Microsoft products because they have many security vulnerabilities.
Mostly a witch hunt, but I don't necessarily disagree with the proposal (though I have different motivations). This would perhaps be good for China though, stems their brain drain.
There is a middle ground. Classify all jobs as to whether they have access to sensitive technology or not and don't allow foreigners from non ally countries to work on sensitive tech. So Chinese can still come and even work at big tech companies but not in jobs where they can access the source code for strategic products. There should be three tiers: - national security related (citizen only) - commercially strategic (allies only) - non strategic (anyone)
It's always the least technically competent people that think source code is some kind of magical elixir.
It is not completely untrue. Many Chinese companies are here solely for the purpose of stealing IP. While in the short term it is economically beneficial for US, in the long run it is harmful. Having said that I’d don’t think a blanket ban on all Chinese students is a good idea. It will hurt US universities and the economy of neighboring areas.
Surprisingly large amount of haters on anything China
Xenophobia motivated by economic competition mostly. Now... where’s that guy who kept making threads with titles like “Asian men, Trump stands with you!”? Where are all the people who were saying “Trump’s anti-ILLEGAL immigrant, not all immigrants!”? Where are all the people claiming that the anti-immigrant sentiment among conservatives was aimed at just allowing immigration of people with merits (like money and grades to go to US universities)?
For those who support ban Chinese students, do you also support Muslim ban? For the haters, do you hate Chinese or Muslim more?
There never was a Muslim ban
Trump banned citizens from 7 Muslim majority countries (except North Korea) from entering the US. No matter how you call the ban, you support it, right? And you also want to expand the list to include China as well, right? And you think all your co-workers from those 8 countries should not be allowed to stay in the US?
Yes. Less competition for good jobs is good for me.

Trump may consider shaking up the federal reserve if elected.
There's definitely massive IP theft by the Chinese but I was under the impression it happens mostly through joint ventures with Chinese companies?
Check the Chinese Apple engineer who tried to smuggle Apple's self driving IP to China and got caught at SJC a few months ago. These stories are not doing a favor for the Chinese kids who legitimately want to build a life here. It's like the Kate Steinle case that gave Trump all the ammo he needed to crackdown on Mexicans. I know quite a few Chinese yuppie kids and I feel like most of them are here partly as a hedge against China reclaiming their parents' wealth and is a lifeboat to their parents and extended family (once they get citizenship they can sponsor their parents to chain migrate) in case Xi goes full Mao. Check Valley Fair during the weekdays and see how many pregnant Chinese women are here on a "maternity holiday" to give birth to an American citizen. Real estate in Silicon Valley was definitely boosted by Chinese investors looking to stash/launder their money outside of China. Have you seen the buses full of Chinese investors around Cupertino, MTV and such? Granted, now that Xi Dada has put Chinese foreign investment on lockdown, you are beginning to see Silicon Valley housing prices slowing their roll and even houses that have been on the market for more than a few weeks.
