What would you guys consider the Bay Area equivalent to a Chicago offer of $220k (all cash, base plus guaranteed bonus)? Married with 2 kids. 14 YOE. Contractor at FB. Negotiating Bay Area offers. Also have the Chicago offer in hand.
300k
Which company in Chicago is offering that much money? Citadel or google?
Except housing I would expect all other expenses to be similar to Chicago. If your mortgage in Chicago is 2k, it will be 5k in the bay. I would say 300k offer would be good.
600k
700k
My brother has a $180K offer in Chi and a $280K offer from Amazon in Sunnyvale. Picked the Chicago offer after doing the math.
So at least a 100k difference is preferred between the two locations?
This is mostly driven by housing. $$ difference is more if you want a nice big 3000 sqft house in a good school area, compared to a 1 bedroom apt. Do the research on housing prices to get a better feel.
$1M
Food: Chicago House: Chicago Weather: SF Earning potential : SF Job market: SF ( maybe) Pick what is important for you and decide.
people miss the scope of growth , both in salary and professionally, when they do the math with current salary alone. I think if you are in software, then you have a huge growth opportunity in Bay Area as compared to other places (except Seattle to some extent). Even if Bay Area companies have offices in other places, they have much better opportunities in Bay Area offices.
