Any folks who moved from SF Bay Area to Austin- is it worth it? Do you feel you made the right decision given all factors like opportunities, challenges, quality of life?
Dont do it, everyone else already did.
It smells like gaand here. Do Ejaz a favor and stay away
This should be a poll.
Done
do you like bbq? if yes then Austin
Better place to have kids once you make your money in the Bay Area
Negative. Schools are suicidal pressure cookers. My kids flourished much better once we moved out of the Bay Area. All the anxiety and drive to make money over anything else is picked up and magnified by kids there.
Dallas native, lived in the Bay for 10 years before transplanting.. great move on my part. It's hard to start a family, business, or buy a home with COL.
Lived in both places and like it much better in Austin. There's definitely more opportunity in San Jose but that place is an expensive, one- dimensional, pressure cooker. I enjoy my life more here where I have some room to breathe and can forget about tech on the weekends.
It seemed like no matter how much you make on Bay Area it's never enough. And having a family is pointless there. Austin is so much more affordable. The allergies are liveable. Still plenty of tech here. Owning a house is a thing people do here.
I've got two sons in tech, one in Austin and one in Sunnyvale. (Please don't hate me because I'm old!) Both areas are great, but Houston devs are paid better than devs in Austin, and the cost of living is significantly lower than even Austin's cost of living.
But living in Houston is far worse lol
you save more than 40% of money overall but the quality of air and water is not great. you may face some allergic but depends on individuals. opportunity is definitely very less compared to Bay area.
Are you in Austin? I hear the aquifer water around lake Travis is good. But you need to be around the Steiner Ranch area. I would agree with air quality. So much development and sprawl going on. 100% all car dependent. I hear Austin and San Antonio will eventually merge in the next 10 years such that there's no open space between the 2 cities. How is Amazons pay in comparison with Seattle or Bay? Do you get the impression that Austin is currently like Seattle before the tech boom? Or has it already boomed and it's too late for bigger growth?
