Big dog at small company vs. small dog at F/G

I got two job offers. One is managing the Data science department, reporting to VP of AI, at a public company with a few thousands employees. Total comp $400k. I have a few director level friends/allies, and it should be an easy job. It’s also in a low COL region, cheaper than SoCal.

Another offer F/G M1 (a ML team) total $560k. Unknown team dynamics, no ally in upper management.

What are you optimizing for in life?

DM me if you'd like. I was recently in a similar situation.

My financial advisor suggests me to save up to 1M in next 15 years, for kids’ education cost.

      Ok. 70k * 6 kids * 6 years (slackers) = 2.5 mil.

Kids are max age of 4? Youngest born in 8 more years? Invest $45k a year and you will be good.

The 1M target in 15 years could be had with either role though.. may be the reporting to VP role wins for wlb

Wtf 100k unlikely for a good univ? My tuition was 7k/year and I worked for free housing. It was also one of the top public universities.

Private schools are almost never worth the money.

The caveat was "unless it's in state tuition in a state school". Was yours a state school? There are good state schools out there. But even those cost a shit ton for out of state!

Y’all are insane. Teach your kids some discipline and let them take student loans so they know school had a cost. Good lesson for life. Scholarship or in state.

Why dine at $30+ per meal when you can settle for a $5 salad? If you have to ask, you'll never get it.

I would go for the small company, sounds like besides lower pay which is quite high, you will get a happier place to work with.

You'll probably be able to influence alot more in the smaller company, might be friendlier environment as well.
FANG will pay better, but probably way more politics. Hows the WLB for the small one?

Small companies do not necessarily have less politics. I have once worked at a mid sized company where politics was as amusing as in dramas.

I agree, company culture is extremely important, but the bigger the company get, the more politics there is

F/G to smaller company is easy, other way round is not. Try it with F/G, if it doesn't work out, you can easily go to a smaller company later.
