Out of curiosity if you are an engineer what do you all do? Are you all mostly developers for the bank's online platforms, or do you create like statistical programs for bankers to use? I'm a new grad and I'm Interested to know what the environment is like. Do you mostly work in tech teams with other engineers or do you have to work with people in finance on the daily?
Tech teams with other engineers if you have a good separation between IT and finance people. It is a nightmare to work directly with the finance guys unless you are socially adept
Finance guys I worked with are basically pretentious jerks..
I surveil trades to find patterns of insider trading. It has scope for a lot of ML etc , but being a cost center we stick to static models mostly
Can't tell you how often people ask me about capital ones credit cards and I'm like, I'm sure you know more than me if you've done any kind of research haha. Granted my dev team supports a different line of business but for the most part finance (domain) knowledge is not a huge part of the day to day. I would imagine you could compare it to how much does someone at Amazon working on a platform supporting the retail site know about the retail industry at large?
"You work in a bank, right? So, should I buy or sell bitcoin?" - that actually happened
Most of us just keep the lights on and deal with red tape 😅
My team deals with some finance related data that goes in and out of the ledger. I also used to work with the regulatory reporting team, building applications for them to generate reports to be sent to the higher management, audit teams and so on. Mostly the apps are intranet applications used within the bank .
I do cybersecurity dev work. It’s actually pretty chill but a lot of teamwork (not with finance people though, mostly other engineers).
Do security theatres like fortify scans and such. Remove libraries from code the bank believes are risks. Some project work. Lots of red tape
I work in risk mitigation, specifically surveillance. It’s a god damn fucking shit show.
The data center failure shows that they didn't manage that risk
Precisely.
Cyber security dev work as well. Lots of web apps, automation, and tools
Within banks there are a lottttt of it positions that don't deal with finance directly. I am on an engineering team that creates MuleSoft environments, and one of my friends work in applying federal regulations, another one working on ATMs Applying through college is generally a mixed bag unless you know what area you want to work in. To clarify, I don't come close to finance on the day to day, but there is an ATM on my floor ; )
