Bombed my Google phone interview

An easy traversal problem, started coding in C but realized that I made a great mistake opting that language. Told the interviewer I'm switching to python, he was ok but I had lost good 10mins by then. Got so nervous that I was shivering. Ended up coding it in python but realized that I had spent all my time on it. Given that it was an easy question while I've read that usually 2 questions are asked, I'm devastated to the point that I want to jump off of a cliff. Months of LC down the drain. Feeling so exhausted and depressed. Have other FANGS onsite scheduled but I wanted this so badly that it ended up making me nerve wreck. Thanks for reading. EDIT: Many thanks to all of you for the kind words!!! Now moving to next battle, onsite due in next few days....keeping the hope high!!!

Don’t beat yourself up, you have a whole lifetime to work at G.

G is not the end of the road. Good luck on the rest!

You know what not to do on your next interview. All the best!

The strange part is I didn't feel this way for other FANG and ended up getting onsite interviews, can't even describe how i felt for those 45 mins of google interview.

I did an interview with Samsung recently, didn't make it through even after writing code well. The recruiter said Samsung was looking for people with more seniority, also went on to say that companies like Google and Samsung have a high hiring bar. So don't feel discouraged if you didn't make it. Somethings aren't in our control, but some are. Keep leetcoding or whatever you do. Positivity is what sees us through the interview process and on that note I will ace the Samsung interview one day 😅

It happens to everyone. Hope you feel better soon, and start going at it again. Good luck!

I am in the first “phone rejection phase” . This is my first wave of interviews after like 5 years

All the best to both of you.

You did months of prep in C and weren’t prepared to do a traversal in it?

Marvell elkdead OP Jun 18, 2019

No my LC practice was on both C and python. The question required a lot of memory allocation at run time and as soon as I realized it, I switched to python. Ended up solving it. But when the question was presented, I thought of doing it in C, which was the mistake plus some confusion because my recruiter had specifically told me that my C knowledge would be tested which was not the case because before switching to python, I asked interviewer if he'd like to see the solution only in C. He said, he has no such reservation, he only cares about the optimal solution. That threw me off and I got (very) nervous knowing that I should have asked this question in advance.

Fair enough. Good luck

Google's loss

Samsung deLeet Jun 18, 2019

I guess google was your main target, so think about it as now you have a whole year to practice. Also the other interviews will be good practice as well. If you set longer term goals then you will be more relaxed. Set your google goal to five years and work towards that.

Chin up! Loop and repeat

Oracle pzd Jun 18, 2019

Switch to a functional language and get rid of loops. OP should have learned his lesson by now 😜
