I am trying to get into the field of data science, but besides familiarity with the basics of sql, I'm pretty on experienced. Planning on teaching myself tableau. Any suggestions to get into this field?
Once you have mastered these, you can work on exploration of data using a programming language such as Python or R on Kaggle.
The field is vast but you don’t need to boil the ocean imho.
You'll probably start as a data analyst. Learns basic stats and sql. R is great as is being able to present your results well. Tableau seems like overkill as it will be pretty company specific as to whether or not they use it. My recommendations are much more generalizable.
Are there any resources/tutorials for advanced sql, beyond W3schools? Can be a book or a websites
Hacker rank has some good advanced sql exercises as well
Don’t learn Tableau. You don’t even really need to know R or Python. Just get really good at SQL and study the metrics of the industry you’re going into. Going to a SaaS company? Learn retention, basic lifetime value. Ecommerce? Know basics of transactional profit and repurchase rates. Gaming company? ARPU, spend pct, whales, etc. study common visualization techniques and what you’d use for certain metrics. That’s about it
Do you think you’d need a Master in Data Science to break into the industry? Or a bootcamp would do?
Learn SQL, excel and basic business cases first. You will be ready to crack many interviews. Also learn some experimentation basics.
