More so the leaders and product people @fitbit --> considering applying for it :)
Nope serious!
If you’re a SWE, then Fitbit CAN be a good place to work, depending on where you’re placed. The feature teams seemed to constantly be pulled in different directions, so I imagine that is frustrating (maybe that answers your product question?). Fitbit is trying to figure out new revenue streams, but hasn’t had much success so far. The infrastructure/platform teams are more settled and insulated from sudden changes by product. Most infrastructure teams generally have clear goals and well defined roadmaps. WLB is great, and there are many opportunities to make a significant impact. On the touchy feely side, morale isn’t great, especially in terms of the company’s future prospects, but maybe that means there are more opportunities in product. That also speaks to belief in leadership. I’m not sure anyone is confident that our current leadership will get us out of our rut, but they at least seem to be trying. One awesome thing, though, is that generally everyone is behind the company’s mission statement, so at least it feels like we are all working towards a common goal.
That was very helpful. Thank you. Why are folks not confident about leadership team? What could they do better?
Well... given that the stock has sunk 90% from the high... and nothing Fitbit has done has remotely moved the needle, there isn’t too much to build confidence off of. I’m not sure what they could do better, I think perhaps the current leadership just isn’t the right one to turn the company around. Fitbit continues to primarily be a hardware first company, and even then, our hardware isn’t the best, especially when you have $30 trackers on one end, and $199 Apple watches on the other. Fitbit still doesn’t have a compelling software product to generate revenue from. It is not clear to me why Fitbit doesn’t clone Calm or Sweatcoin or any of the other top free health apps on the market. My personal opinion is that we should concentrate on generating money from software and reduce the number of hardware products we offer. Hopefully, someone in product can identify that killer health app that Fitbit should build (maybe that will be you?) to turn the company around.
