Hey guys looking to switch over to the investment industry. Currently 3 YOE as Credit Analyst for community banking. Bachelors in BusAdm. from smaller state school. Considering going back to school full time for my masters in finance, taking CFA level 1, or fulltime MBA. Want to get into equity research, M&A, IB, or portfolio management. Any advice for me?
It sounds like you have no idea what you really want, so it’s tough to offer advice.
You gotta be a student from top finance university. This area is just monopolized from people from few specific universities specially in Boston. A complete CFA or completion of CFa till level 2 will help
Putting “Pursuing CFA level 1 or 2” on a resume is a lot like saying “Thinking about getting an MBA in the future in case that matters” L3 or gtfo. Other than that, CFA is only helpful for being a portfolio manager, and might add a little edge for Equity Research. Otherwise it’s pretty much useless and CFAs are a dime a dozen. IB/M&A like he said you need a top university or you’re in the garbage bin. Unless you were born holding a lacrosse stick and you have a lot of private school connections.
You need to define what path you want to go down before you hop into an advanced education. MBA for IB, better be from a top B School.
These are all very different careers with different skills
