New CS grad here. I am from NC RTP area, have 2 local offers and 1 offer in Santa Clara. My friends' opinions I have heard can be summarized as "Savings will be more in RTP but carrer growth is much more in Cali". I can't decide what to pick, RTP or Cali. What are the points that I should consider?
I'm from Raleigh (NCSU), worked in Raleigh for 4 years and Bay area for 2. Here's my 2 cents - assuming you are in no hurry to settle down and buy a house, take the Bay area offer, work here for 5-10 years. Try to live frugally and get some savings under your belt. At the end of this time frame, move to a larger tier 1 or 2 company with a bunch of remote offices. Build trust with your manager and move to a remote office.
RTP>Bay>RTP here. Use the Bay for career leverage if nothing else. If you can stay, stay! Just try your hardest while you’re there like you’re gonna stay forever. Remember, forever is taken one day at a time.
Definitely a lot of good career opportunity in Bay Area, also if u r looking to work in a startup this is the place to be. However work life balance is bad and its quite expensive to live.
Thank you. Could you comment on how much does " being a local candidate" matter in the hiring process? In my experience, my friends in California gave almost twice as much interviews as me. Getting a call seemed easier for them
Yes it is, I have not experienced it personally but being local helps, companies feel that you know the bay area work culture and they can save money in relocation which can be $40k+
