Didn't make the comment from point 1 so won't address that, but...

#2 and #3 revolve around money, at their core. I would argue this is a different thing from being overrated - Seattle and Texas (not Miami!) provide better value for the money. But there isn't as much to do in the urban sense, compared to glass cities like Manhattan.

As for #4 - I agree. I work in tech and most of my friends are in tech or sales, but I get the same vibe you're talking about.

It's definitely not a "best value" city. But it's a city that can cater to almost anyone, if they have the money to play. The prewar you're complaining about can even be something extremely tasteful and upscale, in the right setting...

      Well ...

      1. Even as a woman, if you are doing well in your career, you are bound to meet an abundance of great looking and personable men on your level. Something not many cities offer.

But if your other 3 points are why it’s overrated then I will say this:

      1. Yes the real estate market is not good if you aren’t making a lot of money; however, at the end of day this is supply and demand. If people weren’t buying then a 1 bedroom wouldn’t be 700k. It’s the number 1 city in the world what do you really expect.

      2. Funny enough I am a native New York that moved to Brickell, Miami a year ago. I took it because I am 100% remote and didn’t want to deal with snow, so far so great. I also considered Austin, TX of which I’ve visited multiple times. You are correct, the TC/COL aren’t comparable but neither is the public transportation, nightlife (except miami to some degree), diversity, food, activities, and overall opportunity NYC provides. Everyone wants to be in NYC from all over the world because it offers more than any other city. Salaries are higher than 99% of the world and so is the cost, all for a reason.

      3. This one is a big disagreement for me. Everyone works in finance and law? Tech, medical, journalism, fashion, entertainment, artist, and media are huge industries in the city. In most of these fields NYC is the biggest market. At any given happy hour I was meeting multiple people from all different industries. Midtown is the main place where I would say the 2 groups you named could be found.

Either way you are entitled to your opinion but to say NYC is overrated is a weak statement, especially since you didn’t name anywhere you consider better.

Sorry but real estate in NY is damn good compared to SF.
In SF you cannot just move to Oakland and be next to the Bart for half of the cost of rent in SF downtown.
In NY tho. You can be next to the orange line in Brooklyn, yet can pay half of Manhattan rent.

I've seen it's really hard to find tech positions in NYC if you are located in Seattle or Bay Area. Recruiters try to force Seattle/Bay Area locations on you. So if you have a chance to do it now, do it. Most company's NY offices don't have many open headcounts.
